Mariani 1878, an encore a century and a half long

In 2017 it won the Design Couture Awards in Las Vegas in the People’s choise category. And in 2021 Mariani 1878 did it again, this time in the Best in Gold category. The Maison based in Monza, a town a stone’s throw from Milan, is preparing to celebrate 150 years of a life full of awards, which testify to a goldsmith’s skill across the board. The previous prize, for example, was awarded thanks to Pon Pon, a three-dimensional drop pendant with 27 carats of very high quality diamonds. in the jewel each diamond was set individually and inserted in a sort of network that surrounds the central solitaire.

A jewel, the one presented at the Couture, which seems to have also enticed Melania Trump, at the time first lady with domicile in the White House. On the other hand, Mariani jewels in the US have also convinced celebrities Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington, in the mood for gifts to their partners.

Four years later, however, it was been a pair of long earrings with a burnished gold and diamond link that convinced the jury. The Maison, as its name indicates, was founded in 1878 and is managed by the brothers Carlo and Federico Mariani, graduates in economics and masters in gemology, under the guidance of their father Giuseppe Mariani, direct descendant of the founder Camillo Mariani.

Syna from silver to gold

From silver to gold: the pair that founded Syna collects awards ♦ ︎

Syna won in the Best in Silver category at the Couture Design Awards 2019. Not only: they also won the Silver, also in category Centurion Award. But, in reality, it is not a silver focused brand. His jewels, in fact, also use colored stones and gold, as in the Indian tradition, even if Dharmesh and Namrata Kothari, the founders, have not adopted the style of the Asian country for their production. The couple founded Syna Jewels in 2003.

Indian jewelers usually do not forget their cultural origin, spiritual beliefs and, in short, their roots. But Syna has adopted a simple stylistic approach, as is the pop cultural environment of much of the West and, perhaps, that of Fort Lee, a suburb of New York, where designers live and work. The jewels, therefore, in addition to the classic tree of life, exemplify the concept with fairly simple jewels: semi-precious stones cut by drop, semi-precious stones with a graceful shape.

Kuwayama to discover

Kuwayama is a large Japanese jewelry company. It’s time to learn something about it ♦

In Europe many identify Japan with the auto or technology industry. It is commonplace: Japan also has, for example, a tradition in jewelry. Kuwayama is, perhaps, the best known name, also for the size of the company, which is even listed on the stock exchange. Founded by Yukihiro Kuwayama in Sumida-ku, Tokyo, in 1970, the company immediately saw the jewelry from a very industrial point of view, with factories in China and Thailand, as well as Japan.

Born to work precious metals, the company has grown and evolved, to become a consolidated brand also in the design of the jewels, as demonstrated by the numerous international awards (33 at the moment) won by Kuwayama, the latest as Manufacturer of the year at the JNA Awards 2018 in Hong Kong Jewelery & Gem Fair in 2019. The company also has a branch also in Europe, in the capital of diamonds, Antwerp. The jewels offered by the Japanese house are the most varied: from collections with diamonds and semi-precious stones, to lines that are based on Swarovski gems. But most of the production is reserved for other jewelry brands, which use elements such as metal chains.

Harika’s geometries

/

In 2006 she was in New York representing a Turkish designer. A role that, however, was tight for Harika Ustaoglu. So she decided it was time to launch herself into the world of jewelry. The Istanbul designer, who lives and works in the American city, created her own line of jewelry and, in 2014, a brand that has her name: Harika. She took the first steps thanks to the goldsmiths of the Turkish city, in charge of translating the designs of her collections into gold and precious stones, until she found support directly in the USA.

The jewelry design is very modern and undoubtedly original: very geometric shapes, very modern and abstract, with designs that are inspired, she says, even by details captured as she walks the streets of the city. The stones are also cut in an unusual way. The jewels are made of 14 and 18 karat gold and use diamonds of every color, as well as stones such as aquamarine, sapphire, beryl, quartz. A bracelet of hers made it to the Couture finalists in the diamonds under $ 20K category.

Federica Rettore at Orticola

The Orticola collection by Federica Rettore, with a pair of earrings on the podium of the Couture Design Awards ♦

Orticola is the name of an exhibition-market organized in spring in the most central gardens of Milan. It is an appointment for lovers of flowers and gardening, but also a moment of social life for the upper class of the Lombard city. And Federica Rettore was born and works in Milan, even though she has been touring the world with her jewelry collections for a long time. What is link among gardening and the designer? Simple: his latest collection is called Orticola. An idea that must have inspired the jewelery maker a lot, since a pair of earrings from the Orticola collection ended up on the podium (second place) in the Best in Innovative category at the Couture Design Awards.

The beauty of the collection, however, is that it does not aim to reproduce the plants as if the jewels were small sculptures. Unlike other colleagues who copy leaves and flowers using gold and precious stones, Federica Rettore decided to create jewelry as if they were an alien botanic. Leaves, but with opals and gold veins that are not a simple photograph of nature, but an original interpretation. The idea appealed to Couture, in fact, and probably will be successful even among those who attend Orticola.

The 15 winners of the Couture Awards

The 15 winners of the Couture Awards in Las Vegas. An Italian, Carolina Bucci, no Frenches, Fernando Jorge does an encore and … ♦ ︎
A rather disappointing show for Italian and French designers, judging by the winners of the Couture Design Awards. Only an Italian, Carolina Bucci (who then lives and works in London), no French and, to keep the flag of old Europe high, there are a Greek, Nikos Koulis, who is a subscriber to the triumphs on the Las Vegas stage, a Briton, Stephen Webster, and the Danish Shamballa. In any case, here are the 15 winners of the prize: 13 were selected by a jury and two by the public.

Carolina Bucci, premio Best in Gold
Carolina Bucci, premio Best in Gold

As mentioned, Carolina Bucci won the Best in Gold award with a jewel-scarf. The Florentine designer, in fact, often uses for his work a knitting in Florentine style, his homeland. Another little piece of Italy, in fact, was represented by Rosario Autore, an Italian who has been living in Australia for years and is specialized in pearls. In fact, he won the Best in Pearls award with a pearl necklace of the Mari del Su with his brand, Autore (it is the fourth prize he receives at Couture). Webster, instead, won in the Best in Innovative category with a pair of full circle earrings with diamonds.
The recognition as Best in Bridal was awarded to the American New York Eva Fehren, with a diamond ring that all the promised brides would like to receive. So much so that the designer does not want to sell it. From Cleveland, however, comes Heather B. Moore, winner of the Best in Silver award with a curious bracelet adorned with elephants. A gem against poaching, she said. Instead, she is the winner of the Best in Color Gemstones Under 20K $, Ann Korman, designer of Ark Fine Jewelry, with her earrings in opal and moonstone. The Best in Platinum has crossed the Pacific Ocean and landed in Japan, home of the Kuwayama brand, for a necklace composed of effervescent bubbles.
Other winners: Best in Colored, award for the best colored gemstones over 20,000 dollars, was won by the Indian Amrapali Jewels for a brooch with 50-carat emerald and one of the diamonds with “lotus cut”. Best in Diamonds Below $ 20K went to Studio Rêves for a pair of earrings, while the Best in Diamonds over $ 20K was won by Mike Joseph with an impressive cascade necklace.
Also awarded for the Best in Couture Design Award Men category by the Danish company Shamballa Jewels for the 18K gold-plated SJ Flip bracelet with gems. Best in Debuting went to Vram, Maison based in Los Angeles and founded by Vram Minassian. As mentioned, Nikos Koulis won the perhaps most prestigious award, Best in Haute Couture, for a necklace with diamonds, enamels and rock crystals. The Editor’s Choice went to the earrings of the Brazilian Fernando Jorge, who repeated last year’s prize in the Diamonds Above 20K $ category. Finally, the People’s Choice, voted live during the award show, went to Julez Bryant for a skull-shaped pendant. Giulia Netrese

Italian absent, some new names, some remarkable pieces: Las Vegas Oscars jewelry, or rather the Couture Show, ended without even a brand or an Italian designers among the winners. A flop.
