Among the most important pieces at the auction stands a Cartier London diadem, studded with 70 carats of aquamarines: it is considered the top lot of the auction. Dating back to the 1930s, the diadem is therefore a classic creation of the art deco period, given that the aquamarines were very popular at the time. The tiara can also be worn as a necklace. The estimate of this high quality jewel is between 34,000 and 70,000 euros.

Actresses, duchesses and princesses have been fascinated by the Panther motif. At auction, therefore, many pieces of this series are offered: pendants, necklaces, pendant earrings and bracelets, all with the unmistakable panther. Estimates start from € 6,500 for a bracelet, up to € 30,000 for a necklace. The proposed estimates have often been exceeded in the latest Dorotheum auctions.

It is worth mentioning the story of the Cartier panther.
The first appearance of the Cartier panther is from 1914 on an advertising poster by the French painter and illustrator George Barbier. Shortly afterwards Jeanne Toussaint, who became the director of the bags and accessories department, and in 1933 the artistic director of the Parisian house’s jewelry sector, began the panther era. The creations with the noble predator symbolized self-awareness, elegance and independence, reasons why Jeanne Toussaint could identify herself as the Coco Chanel of the art of jewelry. She herself, Jeanne Toussaint, was nicknamed by Luis Cartier with the name of “panther”. Jeanne worked for the French jeweler until 1970 and her panther is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the new Cartier collections to date.

The pieces at the auction are real masterpieces, starting with the Dunhuang Pipa Necklace, with an intense yellow fantasy diamond of 100.02 carats supplied by Sotheby’s. The estimate of the jewel is 5-6.25 million dollars. The name can be misleading: the shape of this necklace resembles a Chinese pipe, which is a musical instrument similar to a lute, with four strings. It is in 18-carat white gold, with a sparkling pavé of diamonds running along the neckline. The artist – designer Hu said he was inspired by images of women playing piping in Dunhuang, an oasis for travelers in the desert area of northwestern China along the Silk Road. The necklace can be transformed into brooch and earrings. But the other jewels are equally exceptional. Federico Graglia

Christie’s success for the maharaja’s auction

The jewels of the Maharajas of the Al Thani collection sold by Christie’s at an auction of 109 million dollars ♦ ︎

It seems that the era of the maharajas retains a great charm. And, in particular, they have fascinated the opulent jewels that were part of the celebrated Al Thani collection, emir of Qatar. Indeed, judging by the outcome of the Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence auction organized by Christie’s in New York, these jewels beat everyone. Thanks also to the tour organized by Christie’s in London, Shanghai, Geneva and Hong Kong, in addition to the New York exhibition, which welcomed 50,000 visitors.

The auction that included the jewels of Indian nobles ended after a 12-hour marathon. Result: sales of 109.3 million dollars (equal to 97.5 million euros), with 93% of the pieces sold. No wonder the auction has established the highest total for any sale of Indian and Mughal art objects, and the second highest auction total for a private jewelry collection.
The sale was presented in partnership between Christie’s jewelry department and the World Art department, together with the independent art consultancy The Fine Art Group.

It’s worth going into detail: during the sale, three worldwide auction records for Indian works of art were touched and 29 lots were sold for over 1 million dollars. The top lot has been touched by a devant-de-corsage jewel (that is, worn on the chest), the Belle Époque era by Cartier, Paris, 1912, sold for 10.6 million to a private collector. Among the other lots that have reached top prices, there is also the Diamond of Paradise diamond, 52.58 carats, D Color, IF, which reached 6.5 million, while a dagger with carved jade handle, Lo Shah Jahan Dagger, was sold for 3.4 million, a record for an object of Indian jade and record for a piece Shah Jahan.

The Moghul jewels at auction with Christie’s

Nearly 400 rare jewels of the Moghul dynasty at auction with Christie’s in New York ♦ ︎

The Mughals, we remember for those unfamiliar with the history of India, were members of an imperial dynasty that reigned during the Islamic domination of the great Asian country. The Mughal Empire lasted from 1526 to 1857. Its founder was Babur the Conqueror: he was a descendant of the great Turkish-Mongolian general Tamerlane and before arriving in India he ruled a city of today’s Uzbekistan.
Of the Mughals the ancient palaces have remained, buildings like the famous Taj Mahal, but also many jewels, much sought after by collectors. On June 19, in New York, a selection of these jewels will be put on sale at an exceptional auction of Christie’s: Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence. Jewels that have made history, unique pieces that date back almost 500 years ago, at the time of the first part of the Mughal dynasty. The collection includes almost 400 objects made of gold, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies. In addition to the classic jewels, such as necklaces and rings, there are also daggers in the catalog, many of which have been worn or used by the royal and noble families of India.

Indian royal treasures

Aigrette (gioiello per turbante) di diamanti e smalti di Mellerio

Among the many Indian royal treasures in the collection is a jigha (turban ornament) encrusted with diamonds on white gold, created between the mid and late nineteenth century. The collection also includes exceptional diamonds, including the Mirror of Paradise Diamond and the Arcot II Diamond, both originated from the Golconda mine, the oldest diamond mine known to man. The Arcot Diamond is a pear-shaped, brilliant-cut stone weighing 17.21 carats. It is one of two similar diamond drops sent to Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), the wife of King George III, from the Nawab of Arcot. The diamonds were later purchased at auction by the Marquis of Westminster and then mounted in the Tiara of Westminster, which was worn at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Another remarkable piece: the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace (from the middle to the end of the nineteenth century), is made of gold with seven large triangular diamonds, each framed by a perforated panel of diamond leaves with a Kindan workmanship, a traditional type of jewel made with Indian precious stones, which includes various gems and a gold leaf positioned between the stones and its support.

Cartier jewelry

Of all the great jewelery houses, Cartier has had the longest and most productive collaboration with India, which derives from Jacques Cartier’s passion for the country. The jeweler made frequent visits to India, meeting regularly with the royal families with whom he established close relationships. Many of Cartier’s most beautiful jewels of this period have been inspired by Indian architecture, gems and jewels. One such example is a splendid platinum belt brooch from 1922 with diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. This piece was part of the collection of Sybil Sassoon, Marquess of Cholmondeley and daughter of Sir Edward Sassoon and Baroness Aline de Rothschild. It was worn both for the coronation of King George VI in 1937 and for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Federico Graglia

A pink Moussaieff at top

A pink diamond ring by Moussaieff has reached the highest price at Christie’s auction in Hong Kong ♦

Hong Kong in pink. Although it weighs only 3.43 carats, a fancy vivid pink diamond mounted on a Moussaieff ring and surrounded by pear-shaped and marquise-shaped white diamonds, jokingly called Bubble Gum Pink, was the most requested jewelry for the sale of Magnificent Jewels in Hong Kong organized by Christie’s, which totaled 44.4 million. The price of the ring was within the estimate: 7.5 million dollars (it was between 6 and 8 million).

The auction included more than 260 lots of rare jewels, including jade ones, as is traditional for sales in the Chinese city. But it was another type of green gem to soar: the Grand Muzos earrings, with untreated Colombian emeralds of 23.34 carats and 23.18 carats with pearls and brilliant-cut diamonds (3.01 carats each) in platinum. Also, in this case, we remained in the valuation fork, with 4.4 million (the estimate was between 3.8 and 6.5 million).

Jade, however, did not disappoint: a jadeite necklace with 47 pearls of green stone of about 13.3-9.8 mm, with an oval cut ruby clasp and circular-cut diamonds and baguette, was awarded for 1.9 million. The Bulgari necklace was also well received with a diamond F, 11.69 carats pear-shaped IF and a brilliant blue-green diamond of 1.02 carat, sold for 1.6 million. No buyer, instead, for a highly anticipated jewel: a brooch with a Kashmir sapphire of 26.41 carats, not heated. It was estimated between 4 and 6.5 million, but found no buyer. Federico Graglia

Sotheby’s crowns the Serpenti necklace

//

Bulgari Serpenti necklace was the most requested piece at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎

The Magnificent Jewels spring auctions seem like a ping-pong game among the big auction houses. The one organized by Sotheby’s in New York, for example, has shown strong interest in antique and contemporary jewelry and pieces by Bulgari, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Harry Winston, but also for colored and white diamonds. The sale, which also included fine jewelry, totaled $ 21.5 million.

The timeless appeal of rare designer jewelry has been reaffirmed in New York with the masterpieces of Bulgari, Tiffany & Co. and Cartier, created over a century, capturing the attention of international collectors. It was exciting to beat these objects of great interest and to see that the attention was translated into a so lively relaunch contest.

The eyes were on the Serpenti necklace made of diamonds by Bulgari, which reached 920,000 dollars (halfway through the estimate of 800,000-1,000,000 dollars). The jewel is composed of 260 carats of diamonds. Among the period jewels, the Pendeloque brooch with diamonds, corals, emeralds and beads was also highly appreciated, sold for $ 824,000, more than double the highest estimate (350,000). The shape of the brooch is supple: originally it was intended to cover the shoulder. But she was inspired by the Indian sarpech, a turban pin that hangs like a tassel between her eyebrows. Moreover, the graphic geometry of the piece as a whole is strongly architectural: the triangular projections of coral and diamonds evoke the winged roofs of the Far East pagodas, prefiguring at the same time the iconic Chrysler Building in New York.

The auction house also signals the outcome for a set that includes rare sautoir in enamel and diamonds and a pair of Tiffany & Co earrings, which were sold to an online bidder for $ 500,000 (maximum estimate of 300,000). Designed by the great American jeweler Paulding Farnham, this set was shown for the first time at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, which celebrated the centenary of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. At the time, Farnham was the main designer of Tiffany & Co and the jewelry director, responsible for famous designs including his acclaimed orchids series and the Belmont Stakes Trophy. The necklace and earrings presented in the auction are embellished with large rose-cut diamonds framed by antique European diamonds and single-cut diamonds. Paulding Farnham’s works rarely appear on the market but some important pieces have entered private collections and museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Design Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Diamonds and period jewels like the Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: here are the results of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York ♦ ︎

A ring with two blue diamonds of 6.7 million dollars. It is the price realized for the most prominent piece of the Magnificent Jewels auction organized by Christie’s in New York. A sign that colored diamonds are still popular, even if the price did not reach the maximum estimate, which was 8 million dollars.

On the other hand, diamonds were still the most requested pieces. A rectangular-cut diamond of 16.33 carats, on platinum and 14-carat gold from Tiffany & Co was beaten to 1.6 million, another marquise-cut diamond ring of 16.69 carats totaled slightly less, 1.45 million, and an oval cut rose diamond ring was purchased for 1.4 million. Other stones have found buyers for figures of just under a million dollars.

The outcome of the sale of jewelry is interesting. The highest price was obtained by a Zip necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels: estimated for a maximum of 200,000 dollars, the piece was more than double: 483,000 green tickets. Instead, the diamond and sapphire bracelet sold for $ 435,000 respected the forecast. The sapphire has also won acclaim for a ring of Bulgari beaten at $ 375,000. And always of the Roman Maison, a multigemma necklace has found a buyer for $ 375,000. Federico Graglia

Magnificent Jewels in New York with Christie’s: here are the most interesting pieces for sale at auction ♦ ︎

As always, as it was and as it will be, the Magnificent Jewels auctions hide pieces that make jewelry lovers go crazy. There is no need for some diamonds in the catalog to add a record to the list of more expensive gems. Jewels and exceptional stones, however, are not lacking at the auction on 16 April in New York organized by Christie’s. In short, the Magnificent Jewels rarely disappoint.
The auction (285 lots) includes a selection of colorless diamonds, colored diamonds and precious stones, along with important signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels.

The king of the sale should be the Twin-Stone Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring of 3.06 and 2.61 carats, two stones valued between 6 and 8 million dollars.

There are also three D-colored diamonds of over 15 carats, including a ring with marquise-cut diamonds of 16.69 carats, color D, type IIa, potentially internally flawless, from the Elizabeth Stafford collection (rated between 1.2 and 1.8 million).

In addition to large stones, the catalog includes significant signed pieces by Bulgari, Cartier, Harry Winston, Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels. In the collection of Florence and Herbert Irving there are, for example, a Burmese ring with 9.73 carat rubies and diamonds by Harry Winston, a sapphire from Madagascar and a diamond ring of 16.88 carats from Bulgari, a sapphire necklace and diamonds by Bulgari.
From the collection of Jean Tailer come a brooch in the shape of a dolphin with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and gold by Jean Schulmberger for Tiffany & Co. and a 18.36 carat diamond ring, J Color, VS2, by Cartier. Federico Graglia

A egg of 13.8 million

/

An oval diamond of over 88 carats sold by Sotheby’s for 13.8 million dollars in Hong Kong ♦ ︎

Big diamonds are forever, at least in auctions. The spectacular new confirmation comes from Hong Kong, where a spectacular oval brilliant diamond of 88.22 carats, D Color, Flawless, Type IIa, perfect according to every critical criterion, was sold at the Magnificent Jewels auction for 13,8 millions dollars, or 12.3 million euros. The diamond was one of only three oval diamonds of over 50 carats auctioned, and the largest for over five years. It was bought by a private Japanese collector, who admired it when the stone was on display in Japan, in the usual road show that precedes sales of this type.

After paying a similar sum, the collector took the satisfaction of baptizing the diamond, now called Manami Star. Manami is the name of the eldest daughter.

The diamond was contested by three bidders and started with a valuation between 11.2 and 12.7 million dollars, which it exceeded. The price per carat is $ 156,150.

We were thrilled to handle a diamond of such rarity, which now takes its place in the roster of top white diamonds to have come to the market here at Sotheby’s Asia. Three clients from the region competed for the stone – testament to the strong demand for diamonds of this quality in this part of the world. At 88.22 carats, this lucky stone now carries the name of the fortunate child whose father has chosen to give it her name. A happy moment in the journey of one of the earth’s greatest, oldest treasures.
Patti Wong, president of Sotheby’s in Asia

Perfect according to each critical criterion, the diamond has reached the highest rankings based on each of the standards with which the quality of a stone (the four Cs) is judged. The diamond is the color D (the highest grade for a white diamond); of exceptional clarity (it is completely flawless, both internally and externally), and has an excellent gloss and symmetry. As with the Koh-i-noor diamond (also oval) and the Cullinan I, which are part of the British Crown Jewels, the stone belongs to the rare sub-group which includes less than 2% of all gemmed diamonds, known as Type IIa . The diamonds of this group are the most chemically pure type of diamond and often have an exceptional optical transparency.

Finding a rough diamond that allows those who cut it to shape a stone over 80 carats is very rare. The 242-carat rough stone that produced the diamond was discovered in Botswana in the Jwaneng mine, a mine owned by De Beers and the Botswana government, known for the production of high quality raw materials. After its discovery, the rough diamond was cut and polished for months. Given the elongated shape of the rough stone, the oval shape was chosen to preserve the greatest amount of weight. A great skill and precision was needed to cut a stone of this importance: a level of experience and mastery possessed by only a small handful of cutters from all over the world.

In the same auction, a ring with sapphire and diamonds was sold for 2.4 million dollars, another ring with pear-cut diamond and pink diamonds was sold for 1.7 million, while a necklace of diamonds and emeralds by Van Cleef & Arpels found a buyer for $ 1.1 million. Also noteworthy is a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, also worth over a million US dollars, as well as an emerald and diamond ring. Federico Graglia
