Harry Winston top lot at Christie’s

An emerald ring of Harry Winston was the king at Christie’s auction in London ♦ ︎
A look at the result of the important Jewels auction of Christie’s in London. The 1870s Victorian parure with diadems and necklace, diamond stars garland, were not the top lot, but ranked third. The set, made by Collingwood & Son, was sold for over $ 404,000 (on an estimated 100-150,000): a good result, but the most prestigious crown is touched by a Colombian Emerald ring with a rectangular cut signed Harry Winston. The ring was sold for $ 480,000 to an anonymous buyer. It should be noted that 44% of sales were concluded online or by phone. Great result also for a Sri Lankan Sapphire pendant with 50.36-carat cushion-shaped pendant, sold for $ 434,000. Federico Graglia

The charm of vintage tiara

A Victorian parure with tiara is the jewel more refined in Christie’s auction in London ♦
The charm of Old England combined with that of traditional France. Two aspects of jewelery that can be identified with the Victorian period and that of Belle Epoque and Art Deco. These two cultural trends, which influenced art, architecture and crafts, were also a point of reference for jewelery. Two great moments, which are well represented in Christie’s auction scheduled in London on June 13th. Among the most representative pieces for sale, in fact, there is a Victorian parure with necklace and tiara characterized by 14 single diamond stars, made by Collingwood & Son, around 1870. The estimate is between 100,000 and 150,000 pounds.
Christie’s also points out that the stars, in that historical period, were part of a secret language of symbols, a way to communicate feelings that were kept secret or almost. The stars represented spiritual direction and path. But in the sale of Christie’s there are other attractions as well. For example, the auction includes 50 pieces Cartier, Maison, representing the most classic French jewelery. And there are, of course, jewels Bella Epoque or Art Deco. Federico Graglia

This diamond is a surprise

A diamond bought for £ 10 sold at 656,750 from Sotheby’s
Occasionally, a painting bought at a marketplace reveals (or hides) a masterpiece of a master and is immediately re-evaluated. More rarely, it turns out that a jewel is more precious than it was believed. Let’s just say it: usualy it happens exactly the opposite. But it is not the case of a lucky one who bought a ring for 10 pounds (about 11.5 euros) by accident with what he thought was a big crystal. Instead, it was a 26-carat diamond, which was sold now by Sotheby’s in London for £ 656,750, about 775,000 euros. The ring was sold after a hectic bargaining lasting only two minutes: before the auction the experts had estimated the jewel at a maximum price of £ 350,000. Do not, however, hope to have the same luck when you buy a ring at a market. Another interesting item of the auction was a brooch by Cartier worn by Margaret Thatcher and sold for the benefit of the Endeavor Fund, which supports the recovery of injured, military and sick and injured women. Other jewels for sale were from the collection of King Farouk of Egypt. Federico Graglia

Christie’s Belle Epoque style

A Belle Epoque by Cartier necklace triumphed at Christie’s auction in Paris ♦
A $ 1.4 million Belle Epoque cartier necklace was the top star at Christie’s auction in Paris. The auction house notes that it is the highest price achieved in a sale in the French capital, which was followed remotely by buyers in over 20 countries. The necklace is made up of old cut diamonds with pear-shaped mobile pendants and other round cut diamonds on platinum frame. The auctioneer also sold all the lots in the collection of princess Isabella of Bourbon Parma, who disappeared in 2015 and descended from the ancient noble dynasty. The noble woman’s jewelry was sold for 624,250 euros, three times the basic estimate. A bracelet by Cartier, deux chimères, with coral and diamond, was sold for 374,500 euros, against a forecast of 20,000-30,000, and the 59% of the lots, Christie’s said, were sold above their initial estimate. Michele della Valle, successful in Geneva

Success for Michele della Valle’s jewelry at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva ♦
They say art is a luxury that is not recognized to much. But selling of Sotheby’s Fine Jewels, which was held in Geneva, testifies that those who have artistic talent will receive the merited consensus. This is particularly the case with one of the best international designers, the Italian Michele della Valle. Sotheby’s had collected 82 jewels of exceptional virtuosity, which for Valle is the standard quality. And the result was right to the auction house: 98% of jewelery was sold, for a total of $ 1.3 million, ie almost three times the base estimate of the lots. A result of great importance and well deserved. It is a sign that you do not need to bet just on big collectors of diamonds like coconuts and with imaginative names to attract those who appreciate the art of jewelery.
In total, the Fine Jewels auction totaled $ 5.3 million, with 86.5% of the sold lots. Well sold also jewels by great Maison, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Bulgari. Federico Graglia

The Adrian Cheng’s Olympus

Adrian Cheng and his Chow Tai Fook in the Asian’s Design olympus ♦
At Christie’s Auction at the end of May in Hong Kong, a set designed by Adrian Cheng composed of a complicated geometric necklace with rectangular green tourmaline inside a perforated onyx, rubies, sapphires and diamonds, bracelet and a ring, mounted in gold and made by Chow Tai Fook, was sold for $ 32,239. But, in reality, it is not the price that counts, but the recognition for a designer young and out of the ordinary. Adrian Cheng Chi-kong was born in 1979 and is the founder of K11 and K11 Art Foundation, but also executive director of Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Jewelery Group. He is also a patro. He was born in a wealthy family: he is Cheng Yu-tung’s grandson and heir to one of China’s most influential families, with companies rated at 16.6 billion. Cheng, however, chose more creativity than business: he graduated in Art before going to Japan to study the culture of the country. He is also one of the largest Chinese art collectors.

Last year Chow Tai Fook presented a collection inspired by the great painters of abstractism, Le Labyrinthe Artistique. The high-end jewelery collection, of course, is the diamond face (of course) of the Maison specializing in jewelry for wedding or ceremonies, with hundreds of stores in China. Now Christie’s has consecrated it among the great designers too. Giulia Netrese

Michele della Valle per 82 at Sotheby’s

In Geneva a Sotheby’s auction with 82 pieces signed by Michele della Valle ♦
It’s called Fine Jewels Auction. But the name does not do justice to the auction organized on the first day of June, in Geneva, by Sotheby’s. It should be called, in fact, Homage to Michele della Valle. In addition to the jewels for sale, even of great value, in fact, there is a real treasure: 82 pieces signed by Michele della Valle. If you do not know him, you’ve done a shame to repair: it’s one of the most imaginative, skillful, sophisticated, refined, eclectic, jewelery designers. He, among other things, also lives in Geneva.
For Michele della Valle they speak of his unique pieces, like the extraordinary flower-shaped jewels, the ironic brecelet that form a phrase, broochs with the shape of a spider: the imagination of the Italian designer is inexhaustible, as selective. Reserved (does not attend fairs and is refractory to public occasions), personally chooses gems, does not stop in the face of any technical difficulty. In short, it is one of the great characters of jewelery. And an auction with 82 pieces signed by della Valle is undoubtedly a rare occasion, because its jewelry is not in the shops: they are the collectors who buy them exclusively on such few occasions. Christie’s has a heart of 12.9 million

A heart-shaped diamond weighing 92-carat and sold to 12.9 million dollars: it was the top lot at Christie’s auction in Geneva ♦
Among jewels, but also wines and watches, Christie’s in Geneva has totaled 113.7 million dollars. It is useless to make comparisons, since the end result of an auction is also conditioned by individual pieces that can raise or lower the pitch. As for jewelery and precious stones, it was waiting for the heart-shaped diamond: it was sold for $ 15 million, at a price per carat of $ 163,016. It’s a new record in auction, says Christie’s, for a diamond with this particular cut, surpassing the previous $ 10.9 million record set just by Christie’s in May 2011. The initial diamond estimate ranged between 14 and 20 million. The diamond, color D, weighs 92.15 carats and was set by Boehmer et Bassenge in a sautoir.
To sell it to an anonymous buyer (by phone) it took only three minutes. This too is a record, of speed. But a good result was also obtained by an oval cut Burmese ruby. Even in this case, the bid price was halfway between the minimum and maximum of the estimate: $ 12.9 million (the starting point was between 10 and 15 million). Another price tag for auction carat was achieved by a blue diamond, cushion cut, fancy intense, almost 8 carats. It was awarded 12.7 million. Federico Graglia

Record earrings of 57.4 million

A pair of blue diamonds and a rose sold by Sotheby’s for a record $ 57.4 million. And it is also a record for a Piaget ring ♦
A mythological record. To mark a new star price for jewels were Apollo and Artemide. No, they are not the gods of Olympus, but divinity of jewelery: Apollo and Artemis enchanted the sale of Sotheby Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva. The two diamonds got the best price ever on auction for a pair of earrings: $ 57.4 million. The buyer (for now anonymous) has subsequently renamed them. The fancy vivid blue diamond is now called The Memory of Autumn Leaves, while the intense pink fancy has been named The Dream of Autumn Leaves.

Siamese brothers
A pretty expensive poem. The two diamonds were sold separately. The vivid blue fancy, 14.54 carats, for 42 million, while the pink diamonds, 16 carats, for 15, 4 million. «It has been a privilege for Sotheby’s to be entrusted with the superb Apollo Blue and Artemis Pink, which have now been renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves and The Dream of Autumn Leaves», commented David Bennett, world president of the international jewelery department and chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland. «The results from today’s sale – which saw more than 90 per cent of lots sold and three new world auction records – yet again underline the strong demand for top quality diamonds, gemstones and jewels. I am delighted that the stones will remain together as earrings. This has been a wonderful inaugural jewellery sale at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva which far exceeded expectations, with a total of over $150 million. We are greatly looking forward to the upcoming auction of Fine Jewels at Sotheby’s rue Diday in Geneva on the 1st of June».
The purple color
As mentioned by Bennet, in fact, the auction marked a third record. An intense purplish pink fancy, 7.04-carat yellow, mounted on a Piaget ring, was awarded for $ 13.3 million, with a price tag of 1.9 million.
Lots 272 – 326 were also highly appreciated, including a private collection with precious pieces and gems of great value: they were sold for 15.9 million double the estimate. 96% of these lots were sold. A 32.42-carat-shaped pear-shaped Harry Winston diamond doubled its estimate and was sold for $ 3.3 million. An emerald ring, always of Harry Winston, has quadrupled its estimate to $ 929,465. A brooch with rubies and diamond sets and a pair of Van Cleef & Arpels clip earrings totaled $ 477,551. Federico Graglia

Il Ponte between Cartier and Krizia

From Cartier to Krizia: a sale of jewels other than the usual organized by Il Ponte Casa d’Aste
There is Cartier, there is Boucheron. But, above all, there are Italian jewelers for selling vintage pieces organized in Milan by Il Ponte Casa d’Aste. It will be sold jewels, but also vintage fashion. With something of unusual, a one lot of legacy of director Luchino Visconti. And a brooch belonged to Maria Cristina of Savoia, the youngest daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele I. Many also the historical signatures of Italian jewelery such as Missiaglia, Cazzaniga, Moroni, Ansuini, Calderoni, Confalonieri, Cusi, Scavia, Villa. But there are also jewels of Bulgari, Buccellati, Damiani, Frascarolo, Pomellato and Lucia Odescalchi. Among the foreign patrol are the names of Mouboussin, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany, Stern, Fabergé, René Boivin, Lacloche Frerès and David Webb.
The piece at top looks like a Cartier Art Deco bracelet, with rubies, valued up to 90,000 euros. Another unusual aspect: the jewels belonging to and drawn by Mariuccia Mandelli, in art Krizia, one of the earliest Italian signatures of Italian fashion, will be auctioned. An elegant way to introduce the last part of the auction, dedicated to clothes and fashion accessories. Federico Graglia

Van Cleef & Arpels wins the heart

The adventures of an hexagon-shaped emerald

An hexagon-shaped Classic Colombian emerald with an adventure story and other great pieces at auction at Sotheby’s ♦
The emeralds are usually cut with a roughly rectangular shape. Exceptions are rare. One of these is the Stotesbury emerald, one of the pieces put up for auction at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels in New York on April 25. But the most surprising aspect is that, beside the rare hexagon-shaped this stone, there is a rather complicated and charming story. The 34.4 carat Colombian emerald, which has a sales estimate 800,000 to 1,2 million dollars, looks back on a path that began in 1908, when Cartier used it for a necklace intended heir of a mining empire, Evalyn Walsh McLean.
The emerald was combined with a diamond of 94.8 carats. Three years later, the Parisian house and Miss Walsh McLean, however, have started a dispute which ended in 1912 with emerald regained control of Cartier. Then the stone was purchased by Eva Stotesbury (hence the name), wife of a wealthy banker of Philadelphia. In 1946 the family sold the stone to the New York jeweler Harry Winston, which has mounted ring and sold it to Bonfils Stanton, another lady of high society. It was sold again and has been part of a private collection since 1971.
The emerald Stotesbury, in any case is not the only piece of rod class. There are, for example, 12 historic pieces of designer Louis Comfort by Tiffany. Or it should be noted a ring with a rare diamond from 1.64 carat Fancy Vivid Green, and a crossover ring set with two Fancy Vivid Blue diamond. Besides valuable piece are a pair of earrings with square emerald cut diamonds, both more than 20 carats and classified as D color, Internally Flawless, lla type with excellent finish and symmetry. A heart beats for Christie’s

A Christie’s auction in Geneva will be loved by collectors: in fact at the top there is a heart-shaped diamond ♦
The return of the big auction of jewelry, the return of dreams for who only can only leaf through the catalog, return the attention of collectors and enthusiasts. An important event has already been set: at the Four Seasons in Geneva on May 17, is scheduled the next auction of Magnificent Jewels organized by Christie’s. The hammer of the auctioneer will mark the judgment of some 250 jewelery. Meanwhile, the jewelry will go on tour as a theater company to be seen live: after Hong Kong, are in Rome (5-6 April), London April 10 to 12, in New York April 21 to 25 and May 5 to 8, before returning to Geneva.
As often happens, the center is a diamond. Large, heart-shaped, 92-carat, D, Flawless, signed by Boehmer et Bassenge. La Maison de Haute Joaillerie that debuted last year is already a star of the auctions. He works exclusively with large diamonds and the highest quality. And with these super stones creates equally precious jewels. The diamond in question has been baptized with the name of La Legende. It is part of a sautoir of pearls: the whole is estimated 14 to 20 million dollars. It is the largest D color diamond heart shape, Flawless, offered at auction.
Earrings and rubies
Another piece in the spotlight: La Vie Bohème, a pair of chandelier earrings, each with a large marquise cut diamond in suspension and a bow with pink diamonds. Each drop is D color, flawless clarity, perfectly symmetrical cuts. So much perfection is valued at 2-3 million dollars.
Rubies like this, until the mid-nineteenth century, only the ruler of Burma or an individual deemed worthy by the sovereign could have had a 15 carat stone ring like the one auctioned at Christie’s. The Burmese rubies were not exceeded in quality. Historically were extracted in the Mogok valley, in the northern part of Burma, only two miles long and half a mile wide. One of the main reasons for the quality of these rubies is due to the high chromium content in the soil, which makes it extremely saturated red, often referred to as pigeon blood. Another factor is their natural fluorescence which has the effect of making the stone come to life and appear internally illuminated. The ring estimate of 10-15 million dollars. But in the auction there is also a ring with a 14.88 carat Kashmir sapphire, characterized by an attractive blue color and excellent purity of a combination rarely encountered in stones of this size (estimate: 1,000,000 to 1.5000000). There are also pieces that belonged to the wealthy ladies of the last century, such as necklace of Doris Duke collection, heiress and benefactor. The necklace is made of platinum, signed Cartier, who has sold 30 April 1937. Federico Graglia

A discount for Pink Star

The super diamond Pink Star is back for sale at Sotheby’s. With a discount of 12 million.
The never ending story of the diamond most valuable in the world: Pink Star, mined in South Africa in 1999, 59.60 carats mounted on a ring, is back on sale. It was sold by Sotheby’s in Geneva in November 2013 to a record $ 83 Million Dollars. but the buyer, Isaac Wolf, after three months did not pay (it was not easy, let’s face it). It happens not often in auctions a flop so sensational, but Wolf complained compliance Failure of a pool of investors agreements that had to share with him the big cost. And so Pink Star was back in the coffers of Sotheby’s, forced by contract to buy back the stone, and put a balance sheet for about 72 million dollars. Last june, a new twist: Sotheby’s was near a buyer. But it was not at all: the diamond perhaps was too expensive. Now the auction house puts on sale the diamond, this time in Hong Kong, April 4. But the estimate is lower, 60 million dollars. It’s a discount enough to find a buyer? Federico Graglia
