Van Cleef & Arpels makes Frivole bloom again

Flowers, an object of irresistible inspiration for jewelers. Petals and stems are also the subject of one of the most famous collections of Van Cleef & Arpels: Frivole. They are frivolities that, just like the flowers found in nature, the Maison periodically blooms with new pieces.

For 2020, for example, the Frivole collection is enriched with eight new jewels, including a bracelet and two watches with a secret. The jewels are characterized by an elaborate realization that focuses mainly on the petals. They are in gold, of course, and can have a variable number, five or seven. The number of flowers that accompany the jewels also varies: a bracelet has five, while the necklace reaches nine. The mirror polishing of the metal makes these jewels particularly brilliant, thanks also to the center of the corolla, where one or three diamonds are located.

The secret watch is a new entry. The dial has a pavé of diamonds and is accompanied by a bouquet of flowers in yellow gold and diamonds. It is a jewel more than a watch and is the result of a patient craftsmanship. Another secret watch takes the form, instead, of a pendant that can be used with a necklace or even as a hair pin: made of white gold and diamonds, this piece is particularly rich and elaborate.

Van Cleef & Arpels re-launches and renews the Frivole collection, flowers in white or yellow gold with diamonds ♦

Frivolity is a serious matter, especially in spring. So Van Cleef & Arpels, 14 years and 91 days after the debut, and a year after reviving it, renews the Frivole collection with nine new pieces. Compared to the collection presented in 2017 some are even smaller. The novelty is centered on the association of three miniature flowers.

Not only that: Van Cleef & Arpels also introduces transformable jewelry. In this case the jewels can be used as brooches or pendants. The generous size of this brooch-pendant highlights the work of mirror polishing of the petals and allows to receive, in the center of a fully blossomed flower, three diamonds. Among other things, jewels benefit from the mise à jour technique, that is, the drilling of the gold surface, made to allow light to pass through the diamonds. In this way the stones shine more.

The gold flowers have three heart-shaped petals, with diamonds that can cover them like a dewy pavé, or substitute for the pistils, in the center, or to punctuate the petals, four stones for each one. The Frivole collection is serious also because it is designed to cover an equally wide range of possible customers. The smallest pieces, those that may please a very young girl, have a price that starts at € 2850, up to the ring with pavé diamonds that rises above € 20,000. The latter is a new entry in the collection, as well as the earrings in the mini version, the pendant (large) and the genus ring Entre les Doigts, a trademark registered by the Parisian Maison of the Richemont group.

Van Cleef & Arpels emphasizes that when we talk about diamonds, even if small, these are those selected based on criteria that are not frivolous: D, E or F for color and VVS for purity. Another aspect underlined is the manufacturing process that remains based on craftsmanship, with a search for movement of the petals which, according to the company, «is an integral part of the creative process of Van Cleef & Arpels. For the Frivole collection, the concept of the volumes and the orientation of the petals have been carefully worked out in order to make the random character of nature. Mirror polishing, a technique that the Maison has used since the 1920s, makes it possible to increase the brightness of gold and to create particularly intense reflections, infusing the vitality of each creation. The search for brilliance is also expressed through the mises à jour, this operation of drilling the gold structure made by the jeweler to allow light to cross the diamonds. Different jeweler techniques are thus combined with extreme attention to detail to enhance the Frivole creations».

Precious reflections to celebrate the winter season: Souffle de Diamants by Van Cleef & Arpels ♦ ︎
White is the color of snow, but is also of the most classic diamonds. Perhaps this is why Van Cleef & Arpels has decided to celebrate the most renowned and desired precious stone with Souffle de Diamants. The edition 2018 by the great Maison event, coincides with the months of winter festivities and snowfalls: in fact, it’s from November 2017 to mid-January 2018.
The jewels are, of course, exclusively made of gold and diamonds. The novelties are inside the lines Lotus and Frivole, in both cases with light, fresh, bright flowers with extensive use of pavé with diamonds. But there is also a technological aspect, a sign of the times: the five most representative boutiques of Van Cleef & Arpels will be equipped with an interactive mirror. On social, customers will be able to share a 10-second video that recreates the atmosphere of Souffle de Diamants.
The lotus flower
But we come to the jewels: lotus flower is one of the most popular jewels in the East as well as in the West. While in India, China and Asian countries the lotus also assumes significance related to the philosophical or religious tradition, in Europe and America it is simply a delicate, ornamental flower. Van Cleef’s lotus jewels have a finely perforated pattern and appropriate proportions. The last pieces added to the pre-existing collection are a bracelet, earrings and a white gold pendant. The petals are distributed on two levels with a relief and movement effect. On the occasion of Souffle de Diamants, the Maison also reveals a reinterpretation of the emblematic Bague Entre les Doigts Lotus, a ring with a smooth body and accentuated tunnel motifs to optimize the circulation of light.
Brilliant frivolity
Equally bright the pieces that make up the Frivole collection, consisting of ring, necklace, earrings and pendant. They are always flowers, but with different petals than Lotus, but with the same impression of lightness. To emphasize for those who appreciate the quality: the central stones, as well as the pavé of jewels are always D, E or F and purity from IF to VVS2.
