Apollo and Artemis: the Sotheby’s divinities

Two Greek gods in the form of blue and pink diamond up for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva ♦
The match among auctions takes place, as usual, in Geneva. One day before the Christie’s auction, will be the turn of Sotheby’s on May 16 to put on sale the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels at the Mandarin Oriental. And, as always, there will be an exceptional piece to fly the imagination of collectors: Apollo and Artemis Diamonds. They are not two Greek gods descended from Olympus, but two diamonds, one is Fancy Vivid blue, the other is deep pink Fancy. The two stones are cut pear-shaped and have been used for a pair of earrings, which Sotheby’s has defined as the most important appeared in the auction. But they are offered separately. The Apollo Blue from 38 million to 50 million dollars, while The Pink Artemis is estimated at between 12.5 and 18 million.
The Apollo Blue is listed as Fancy Vivid blue by the Gemological Institute of America and weighs 14.54 carats, internally flawless: it is the largest of its kind ever to be offered at auction. According to the GIA, Apollo Blue is a type IIb diamond, which includes less than 0.5% of all diamonds. Artemis Pink weighs 16 carats. According to the Gia is a type IIa diamond, the more chemically pure, with an exceptional optical transparency. Not more than 3% of the diamonds mined are colored diamonds and fewer than 5% are pink.
But how come the two diamonds were baptized with names of Apollo and Artemis? It’s called marketing, of course. In Greek mythology, Leto (Latona in Latin), the daughter of Titan and Phoebe, had an affair with Zeus and became pregnant with twins. When Hera, wife of Zeus, discovered yet another betrayal, she wasn’t unable to oust her husband from Olympus, and she has forbidden Leto to give birth on land. Found refuge in Delos, Leto gave birth to Artemis and Apollo. And in Greek and Roman mythology, diamonds were considered tears of the gods.
Next to the two top diamonds, in any case, the auction offers several interesting points. As the riviére diamond necklace that belonged to Princess Anna Murat, or a ring with intense pink diamond from 7 carats, or even a pair of earrings signed Reza rose gold and diamonds, with an estimated 1-1.5 million. Also notable is a ring by Van Cleef & Arpels with one of the considerable weight of 45.74 carat Burmese sapphire. Federico Graglia

Butani, birthday with diamonds

The new jewelry by Butani to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Maison ♦
Mr. Papu Butani celebrates its first 40 years. La Maison bearing the name of the founder, was born in Mumbai (India) and transmigrated in Hong Kong. It has decided to celebrate the anniversary with a new collection of fine jewelry. It’s his specialty. Mister Butani chose to turn to top clients, possibly with blue blood and so, therefore, proposes jewels consistent with this category of buyers.
The new collection, presented at Baselworld 2017, comes with nine pieces made from diamonds, white and yellow, in elaborate puzzle that make up geometric shapes. The new collection also serves as an attraction for the new boutique that Butani opened at the iconic Grand Lisboa Hotel Macau, store below those in the Venetian Macao Resort opened in 2007, one at Cotai Central Sheraton Hotel and the flagship store in Peninsula Hong Kong. In short, the choice of twin sons Papu Butani, Mukesh and Manoj, who since 1999 alongside his father in the management of the company is to stay very close to the category that these jewels can buy them. You can not blame them. Giulia Netrese

Oscar with Swarovski diamonds

It’s a turn: Swarovski passes to diamonds (but not abandon the crystals).
The news is surprising. Swarovski, the company became famous for its crystals, he passes from the other side. In short, it begin to offer diamond jewelry, even if it is synthetic, created in the laboratory. The debut of this new line of jewelry, with a necklace with an Art Deco design, is scheduled during the delivery of the Oscars in Los Angeles. The Academy Awards number 89, in short, will be a turning point. There are somebody who consider this turning point as that of a vegetarian which begin to eat meat. In short, an about-face. Actually it is not quite so, because Swarovski will continue to put beside the diamonds the crystals traditional. This is not, however, an exploit reserved for movie stars: the proof is that synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory Swarovski. And given that creating a laboratory of synthetic diamond costs a lot, you can be sure that the new road Swarovski will not be abandoned. The new line, in any case, will be part of Atelier Swarovski, the division of fashion jewels of the company, who has worked for designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Peter Pilotto. The collection for the Oscars is characterized by a combination of Swarovski crystals and diamonds. It is likely, however, that these jewels will be available to the public in 2018, but for now they will remain confined to the catwalks of the stars in the official exhibitions. About Swarovski: the Austrian brand has also provided 300,000 crystals for the sets of the Oscars. Federico Graglia

The Vanity of Giovanni Ferraris

The new Vanity collection signed by Giovanni Ferraris: colored pearls, fancy diamonds, gold, and a taste a little retro.
“After learning the craft of art goldsmith with passion, Giovanni Ferraris decided to devote himself to the development and production of his ideas.” Thus began the mini autobiography of one of the most sophisticated brands of Italian jewelery, born in the cradle of Valenza. In 1985, in fact, Ferraris founded his Maison and without spending too much time, it has established itself as a reality of the first floor. His collections are always of jewelry with “J” capital. As with Vanity: Giovanni Ferraris took the opportunity VicenzaOro to present new pieces. The collection is centered on the eternal union of gold, diamonds and large pearls, with shades from pink to gold, up to violet. It has one aspect more than the classic, almost with an eye to the Roaring years, in a past dream. Long necklaces, rings and earrings, to which are added small balls faceted fancy cut diamonds with an antique rose cut. Refinements. But beware: the work of the Italian brand is not only marked by the retro feel. This is demonstrated, for example, one of the classic collections such as Twist, where butterflies in sapphires and diamonds are the result of a patented set. So how it is leading the use of titanium, as in earrings with diamonds and sapphires also worn by soprano Anna Netrebko. Lavinia Andorno

Nardelli shines with Sparkle

Nardelli brilliant with Sparkle collection, in this way the Neapolitan jewelery focused on diamonds.
If there is an American dream (getting rich from nothing), there’s also an Italian dream (fly high with the craftsmanship). The artistic history and craftsmanship of Italy is made up of stories like Nardelli: Domenico started almost 40 years ago as a young apprentice in the goldsmiths’ district, in Naples. With the help of the sons of the founder, Nardelli has become a successful company has grown, it is been knew throughout the national territory, and then in all the world, but without denying their origins: the city under Vesuvius and the craftsmanship of the jewelry work . Although, over the years, Nardelli has added to the simplest collections, aimed at a wider audience, even more high-end lines, for example, with the Sparkle line. Also because with the years Nardelli showed a marked preference for the precious stone more loved in the world. White diamonds, but also blacks or brown, are accompanied by white or yellow gold and, in some cases, from colored stones such as sapphires. It’s a traditional design, nothing to do with the tradition of corals and cameos, but instead closer to the Northern jewelery style. Margherita Donato

Messika, Move to design

The favorite collections of Valerie Messika, the Parisian designer queen of diamonds.
Messika, French company dedicated to the cult of diamonds, returns to Baselworld with his fine and high jewelry. Obvious: Valerie Messika, who continues his father’s work André, is certainly not the only one to grapple with diamond jewelry. However, if the history of the Parisian jewelery brand continues since 1972 there is a reason: the absolute quality in the choice of stones, especially the cut, and a surprising originality in the creations, while remaining in a classical realm. With this philosophy that combines a very modern design, with an enhancement of the traditional creativity, Messika has built its reputation. Not by chance has extensive adhesion between actresses, singers and top models. For example, even if the diamond is the king of the house, the House does not deal to propose the classic solitaire. He prefers to focus on original forms, such as the Move collection, which has become a sort of flag: the diamonds are mobile within the golden rails. This combination is adopted for one or three diamonds for rings, necklaces and bracelets. It is also one of the lines proposed for 2017 in the new advertising campaign starring the model Lena Perminova. Lavinia Andorno

Ivy by Boucheron

The ivy leaves Boucheron, high jewelry that challenge the most formidable technical obstacles.
For the big Maison of jewelery, the Paris fashion week is an opportunity to show some pieces out of the ordinary. This is the case of Boucheron, who presented Lierre de Paris, a collection of high jewelery pieces that incorporates an idea that dates back to 1881, with a drawing with a necklace made of ivy leaves. The most important piece is a necklace in white gold and diamonds from the design not only very rich but also very complicated. Have been numerous technical obstacles have been overcome after more than 1,600 hours of work. The ivy leaves are mounted «en Trembleuse», furniture, like natural ones when the wind blows. But of course these do not detach from the branches (it would be a shame, as well as very expensive repair them). In the same collection there are two watches, rings, earrings and another necklace a bit ‘less demanding. These jewels are in addition to other unique pieces of fine jewelry that have floral motifs, one of the specialties by the House of Place Vendôme. Giulia Netrese

Chanel stops time

High jewelry on the wave of tradition by Maison Chanel. The name of collection: Coco Avant Chanel.
Coco Chanel divided in two by the time: before and after. The first gave inspiration to a fine jewelry collection called, precisely, Coco Avant Chanel. The collection consists of 11 parure, imagine for many women, in each of which the Parisian Maison gave a name. As Emilienne, which prefers finery made from beads, while Jeanne entrusted the pink sapphires and white diamonds marquise cut. And pearls for Martha, who even gets 220 for her parure, while in other cases there is a total of white gold and diamonds. The collection includes also two jewelery watches. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, known as Coco for all, it would probably be proud: one time ago, for women wear a watch was dishonorable (yes, many years ago it was considered vulgar), and timepieces were transformed as precious jewels, for those who could afford it. The Jeanne clock, for example, uses 500 diamonds, with geometric patterns reminiscent of the style of Mademoiselle Chanel. The collection, presented in Paris during the haute couture shows, has aroused impression. But it not for the price of the jewelry: it is only communicated on request. Giulia Netrese

Pelamidis in the name of Aphrodite

He claims to be inspired by nature, but there is also a lot of architecture in Michael Pelamidis jewelry, designer born in Greece and grew up in Paris, where he graduated (Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Joaillerie De Paris). After spending many years working between Bangkok and Hong Kong, the designer moved to Athens, where he creates collections with a strong contrast of colors, volumes and material: two-tone quartz, rutile and tourmaline seem to dominate polish gold, cascading baroque pearls are opposed to branches of gold silver plated. In short, they are jewels that surprise for organic forms and dynamic, almost snappy and very wild in the collection Biomorphic, more intellectual, but always natural in the collection Thalassa, with golden ripples that remind of Aphrodite’s myth. The aesthetic feature of Pelamidis is especially noticeable in rings, which for him represent the jewel par excellence: an extension of the personality worn on the most sensual of the body, according to the designer. And then, here chevalier that completely  surround the little finger and rough stones that lengthen  horizontally over phalanges, to catch attention. Matilde de Bounvilles

Garrard, precious birthday

What could be more reassuring than a cup of tea with a cloud of milk, two pastries, a double-decker bus and Queen Elizabeth? Let’s face it: the good old Great Britain retains its charm and, in part, its tradition, even in jewelry. This is attested by Garrard, who boasts of being “the oldest jewelery in the world”: in fact, was founded in London by George Wickes in 1735. Garrard Garrard has offices in Albemarle Street in Mayfair, London, but the flagship store the company is in New York, and more the shops in Tokyo, Dubai, Moscow and Hong Kong. Garrard was the jeweler of the Crown, in charge of maintenance of the jewels of His Majesty from 1843 to 2007. Of course, it is one of the most popular (and expensive) jewelers, with pieces from the very traditional design. No coincidence, by Garrard was the engagement ring with sapphire donated by Prince William to Kate Middleton, which had belonged to Diana.

The Maison celebrated 280 years in business with valuable pieces, such as the Ventiquattro ring, with gold and diamonds, or a ring with large central sapphire mounted on platinum, or bow double ring. From 2013 the collections are the work of the new head of Garrard designer, Sara Prentice: Tudor Rose, which is traditionally known as the floral heraldic emblem of England, for example, consists of about 30 pieces is inspired by the classical heritage the Maison. “I wanted to offer our customers the opportunity to not only wear these jewels for special occasions, but with the different outfits that are in a closet,” said Prentice when he presented the collection. But, of course, it is not about balances acquired from H & M.

The necklace, in any case, can be mounted in five different ways: for example, as a pendant or brooch with a removable staple. “The idea is for a set that can be worn in different ways,” adds Prentice. “The necklace can be disconnected and adjusted by hand, without the use of tools or a laboratory.” Become a collector’s item that can be passed down for generations, because the tradition is, indeed, an important concept for the old England. Not surprisingly, to homage to the history of the royal family, Garrard in his Tudor Rose collection has introduced two tiaras. The British home proposes, in addition, the Wings collection with a new set of 18-carat gold jewelery and diamonds. Includes pendants, earrings, bracelets, cuff links and rings: launched in 2003, Wings ideally represents the concepts of peace, purity and protection. Margherita Donato

The working diamonds of Zsa Zsa

Zsa Zsa Gabor loved jewelry and, in particular, diamonds: here is her sentences more famous.
Diamonds are a girls best friend? Maybe. OF sure they are the best friends of the actresses or, more generally, of the celebrity. Witness the story of Zsa Zsa Gabor, who died at 99 years, a great collector of jewelry and of diamonds in particular. The former Miss Hungary, has made its way to Hollywood without memorable performances on screen, but much more convincing in real life: she had nine husbands. And from everyone she has demanded or has received spontaneously, jewelry. In 2014, a diamond necklace, rivière, signed Harry Winston, which has been of the actress property, was sold at auction by Christie’s. Her most famous sentence was: “I never hated a man enough to give him back his diamonds.” But, given that the jewels were the passion of Zsa Zsa Gabor, experts from the entertainment world have collected some of his most famous phrases: “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and dogs are a man’s best friend. Now you know which sex has more sens”. And: “I love to put on diamonds and beautiful evening gowns and make my girlfriends upset. It’s a wonderful feeling”. About his ring with 20-carat diamond, “Oh, dahling, these are just my working diamonds.” Margherita Donato

The De Beers flowers continue to bloom even in ceramics: the collection dedicated to the lotus petals is always richer.

Diamonds and ceramics, the odd couple of fine jewelery has also touched De Beers, with its first line, Enchanted Lotus Ceramic, made with this compound of titanium carbide and gemstones. Next to two rings in ceramic and diamonds there are, however, traditional pieces made only with white gold and diamond, white and colored. In fact, the experimentation with ceramics is partial: De Beers has used a design of successful as that of the Enchanted Lotus collection, but instead of gold or platinum for the frame in the shape of a lotus flower was used, in fact, ceramics. Of course, the original reason of the lotus flower has been simplified to fit the perforated, white material with diamonds set in rose gold for Daylight and black wing ring with diamonds set in white gold for the Moonlight version. 12 jewelery watches for 2017

Here are 12 jewelery watches that all would like to have on your wrist.
To know what time is it you don’t need a clock: smartphones and computers are always on hand to unveil the time with absolute precision. But a bracelet that, among other things, also marks the time, is something else. The jewelry-watch does not belong to the category of simple mechanisms that mark the seconds. They are an ornament, an accessory, a precious ring that encircles the wrist and do a shining. The most precious also are masterpieces of high jewelry, with elaborate scale of diamonds and precious stones, able to warm up the eyes (and wallet) who seeks them and the wearer. Often they have diamonds, with pavé in elaborate geometric patterns shape. Others prefer intricate decorations around the watch case, usually reduced to a minimum. But there are those who embarks on combinations of colored stones and even coral. Here, then, 12 watches which are mostly jewelery, to count the hours of a new year. Lavinia Andorno

Diamond Love Scavia

Diamonds of the best quality combined with the fantasy of a historic jewelry store in the fashion district of Milan: it is the Star9 collection signed Scavia and Diamond Love Bond.
A marriage of convenience can turn into a happy marriage. Especially when you’re neighbors. In the center of Milan, in via Spiga, one of the most renowned jewelers of Milan, Scavia, it has signed an agreement with Diamond Love Bond, an international company specializing in the marketing of natural diamonds of high quality certificates. Coincidentally, but not too much, the two companies have the same address, although on different floors. The result is the Star9 collection: consists of rings, pendants and earrings with diamond inspired by the shape of the nine-pointed star, which is also the trademark of Diamond Love Bond. In short, on the one hand the quality of the goldsmith’s imagination, the other, the quality of the raw material, the diamonds. “We use only certified diamonds GIA, D, E and F color, clarity FL and IF, excellent quality triple and fluorescence absent,” explains Marco Pocaterra, CEO of Diamond Love Bond. A high and constant quality, stresses, is not even achieved by other emblazoned Maison jewelery. Thanks to this the company is able to sell its diamonds through bank branches. But that’s another story.
The collection don’t is just white diamonds. The Star9 made by Scavia can incorporate Natural Color Fancy Vivid Yellow stone, Green-Blue, Pink and Purple. To give an idea of the price. In the case of necklaces, pendant is linked by a snare: a way to make the contents of the jewel price. But, of course it’s all relative: one star in platinum with a diamond of 0.5 carat deep blue (one of the rarest varieties) costs approximately 24,000 Euros. “It’s not just a piece of jewelry, but also an investment in precious asset” recalls Pocaterra. On the other hand, the goal is to reach customers who demand the best: “I have identified in the extraordinary diamond Diamond Love Bond the perfect partner for this new collection, designed with the same passion that characterizes all my creations, allowing me to offer an extraordinarily personalized service, giving me the freedom to create on the basis of delicious dreams and eternal fulfilling desires “, is the comment of Fulvio Maria Scavia, owner of the Milan fashion house.

The stories by Comete Stories

They shine without overdoing the Comete Stories by the Veneto brand of Lorenzo Muraro.
Lorenzo Muraro is a piece of the Vicenza jewelery history: he leads a company that has focused on the balance between quality, creativity and price. One of the successful brand by Muraro Group is Comete, that is dividing equally its business among the jewels for men and women. The shape of jewels to the fair sex are canonicals, with due variations made by the group of designers, but always in the women’s standards: ring with diamonds, white gold, dangling earrings. Everything ok, without exagerating, nor the price nor the solutions chosen. An example: a pair of heart-shaped earrings in white gold with diamonds of Aurora collection cost 628 euro. A very low price respect their visibility. The path of compromise is that each earring has a central diamond and seven that surround it: the light effect, in short, it is multiplied by the many stones fitted together. In addition, they are real diamonds, but not at the top: are classified G, just enough to make a good effect when you worn, but without drive up the cost dramatically (remember that the most expensive is the class D). This middle way to the jewel is also the Comete secret to being able to reach a wide audience. As shown by the jewelry Comete Stories line. Alessia Mongrando

Carrera y Carrera cool and cold

The winter according Carrera y Carrera: white gold as ice, cold diamonds as the Polo, blue topaz like an iceberg.
The four seasons have always been one of the sources of inspiration for painters, musicians and jewelers. It was the same with Carrera y Carrera one of the oldest jewelry company in Spain (we talked about here). Each season, within the El Retiro collection, has its own style, different from the others. But, among all, the winter, of which you see the pictures on this page, has the jewels that stand out the most and have the most original lines. In short, the company has exceeded 130 years, but is still capable of inventing, instead of clinging to an unchanging style. Also for this reason it has become a landmark in the jewelry world, including at the international level. The jewelry for the winter, as the Iceberg ring, are made of frosty white gold and diamonds. Here and there sprouting blue topaz reflections, cut as a sliver of blue polar ice. It’s really a goosebumps collection. Lavinia Andorno

The precious hours of Chaumet

Chaumet enriches Rondes de Nuit collection with a gold jewel-watch and diamond.
Chaumet, the French Maison on Olympus of the jewelery, a year ago launched its collection dedicated to the Empress Joséphine (we talked about here). Review of history: Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814), was the first wife of Emperor Napoleon I from 1796 to 1809. It was, therefore, Empress of the French from 1804 to 1809 and Queen of Italy from 1805 to 1809. But she was also an exceptional style woman and that’s why Chaumet has dedicated a collection of jewelry in white gold and diamonds, plus some colored gemstone. Now the collection, called Rondes de Nuit, is enriched with new pieces, including a jewel-watch that joins the models already present. It’s more a jewel that a watch, even if the dial hands work fine. The cuff that surrounds the wrist is made with the shape of a large chain, with diamond pavé. Among the others new pieces of fine jewelry, including a ring and earrings, are also added those who have already enjoyed a lot of success and a sigh among those who can not buy them. Blue Nile sold

Blue Nile (jewelry online diamond) sold to Bain Capital.
If you are interested in the jewelry world, and not only to jewelry, keep an eye on this news: Blue Nile, the great American group of online sales of diamond jewelry, will be acquired by an investor group led by Bain Capital  and Bow Street LLC, two private equity funds. The purchase will be in cash and is valued at $ 500 million. What does this mean? Simple: the financial world is betting on growth in sales of jewelry on the web. With the tender offer, will hand 100 percent of the ordinary shares (Blue Nile is a listed company). The Blue Nile shareholders will receive a premium of approximately 34 percent on the stock price. Now start the usual rigmarole of approvals, but the sale seems obvious, less than sensational raises. The jewelry company in the third quarter of 2016 marked net sales to 105 million dollars (but down 4.3 percent). But the sale of online jewelry is growing steadily for years. Federico Graglia

Webster on the Hearts on Fire wings

Stephen Webster signs the White Kites Collection to the American brand Hearts on Fire. And quality it’s not cheap.
Stephen Webster, jewelers and British designer with a maverick image, marries with a diamonds king, Hearts On Fire, an American company founded in 1996 by Glenn and Susan Rothman. The pair has formed a partnership with that of expert designers by flaming hearts, which is led by Italy’s Ilaria Lanzoni. Better to remember that Hearts On Fire is a big company of diamonds, distributed in more than 500 stores in 32 countries around the world. The brand is known for its rigorous selection of stones that are cut according to a model imported directly from Antwerp. This perfectly symmetrical way to work the stones was one of the reasons for the success of the Hearts on Fire. Which now joins the stones to the imagination of Webster in White Kites collection. The jewelry, rose gold or white, are in fact inspired by the flight of white birds. The signature of the designer and the choice of materials, gold and diamonds, also affect the price of earrings, necklaces and bracelets. For a couple of chandelier earrings in white gold and diamonds you get to $ 70,000. And in this case to catch fire is your wallet. Lavinia Andorno
