India Paradiso dell’oro

Is India Paradise gold. There are women in the big Asian country, which are covered with jewels bring him up to a pound of metal. A real effort. The farmers keep their savings to buy the jewelry more showy. There’s even buying gold rings for use as brass knuckles or tycoons who offer gold at Hindu temples to balance their behavior in business casual. In 2011, India imported more gold than any other country in the world : about 1,000 tons, one-fifth of annual global supply. It is the same amount that is located in the basement of the central bank of Switzerland.

The Indians have always been attracted to the jewelry created with the yellow metal. But shopping in this proportion is a recent phenomenon. India in 1982 only consumed 65 tons of gold. And until 1990, imports were almost banned. The gold was to be smuggled and its price in India was about 50% more than that abroad. The typical buyer was a poor peasant in the South, for which gold was an ancient coin to keep hidden in view of difficult times. But deregulation has seen an explosion in purchases. Today, the ingots are bought by wealthy investors and speculators. And most of the gold comes into India legally, through the banks.

Gold continues to be a safe haven. Only a third of Indians has a bank account. And inflation in consumer prices is higher than the interest rates paid by government bonds. The financial system is an accomplice of a government that takes money borrowed cheaply at the expense of savers. While foreigners buy a lot of shares at the Bombay Stock Exchange, because they consider India a growing country, many Indians have already sold their titles. I mean, who has made money has few alternatives. And gold does not seem so bad, especially considering that its price has risen every year between 2002 and 2011.

The second reason why gold is popular, is that it allows you to bypass the legendary Indian bureaucracy. Opening a bank account in India is hell bureaucratic. Gold is rather widely accepted without any documentation and is also a great way to preserve wealth without paying taxes. Some believe that the great gold boom is closely linked to the boom of political corruption in the last ten years.

For jewelers gold rush has a positive aspect, but for the Indian economy is a disaster. Imports of bullion require an enormous effort on its balance of payments : $ 54 billion the year to March 2013. The current account deficit in India has reached an alarming 4.8% of GDP, and slightly more than half of the gap is due to the purchase of gold. To restrict imports, the government has resorted to taxes and imposing quotas on purchases. For now it seems to have worked, with only 1-2 billion dollars of gold imported during the month of October. But over time the barrier can encourage smuggling. The price of gold in India is now 10% above international levels, which suggests an incentive to import illegal. And smugglers are experimenting with new ways to beat the system : Nov. 19, 24 gold bars, worth more than $ 1 million, were found in the toilet of a Jet Airways flight to Kolkata.

france-flagInde Paradis d’or

Inde en 1982 seulement consommé 65 tonnes d’or.
