Il rubino ha un taglio cuscino, pesa 8,62 carati e ha superato la stima massima. Ha anche stabilito un nuovo record mondiale per prezzo al carato. Lo spettacolare gioiello dal raro e prezioso colore sangue di piccione e associato ai rubini più raffinati del Mogok, Burma, non è però stato l’unico a strappare un prezzo milionario. Sotheby’s sottolinea anche il record mondiale d’asta per uno zaffiro del Kashmir (6 milioni di dollari, 5 milioni di euro). Ottimo anche il risultato dei gioielli della Collezione Mavrommatis, venduti per 27,9 milioni di dollari, circa 24 milioni di euro. La collana in perle naturali appartenuta alla Regina Joséphine ha superato la stima ed è stata aggiudicata per 3,4 milioni di dollari, 2,8 milioni di euro. In totale, l’asta di  Magnificent & Noble Jewels ha totalizzato 95.3 milioni di dollari, 79,4 milioni di euro.

Spesso il merito di risultati eccezionali è dato dalla presenza nelle vendite all’asta di intere collezioni private, o di gioielli appartenuti a dive con storie curiose. Come non ricordare l’ormai leggendaria vendita – che si svolse da Christie’s a New York nel dicembre 2011- della collezione di gioielli di Elizabeth Taylor, che fruttò 156,7 milioni di dollari, realizzando il nuovo record mondiale per un’asta di gioielli? Fu venduto il 100% dei lotti offerti a buyer provenienti da tutto il mondo. Le aspettative pre-asta furono completamente spazzate via e alcuni lotti superarono le stime di cinque, dieci e anche cinquanta volte quella iniziale.
