Hydruntum prend diverses r\u00e9f\u00e9rences : un serpent d&rsquo;eau, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire une petite rivi\u00e8re (l&rsquo;Hydro) qui se jette dans la mer, mais aussi un serpent qui d\u00e9fend la ville avec ses serpentins, serpents enroul\u00e9s autour d&rsquo;un b\u00e2ton de Mercure, le dieu mythologique du commerce , qui pourra peut-\u00eatre \u00eatre utile \u00e0 la joaillerie, sans oublier Hydra, un monstre aux multiples t\u00eates de serpent de la mythologie grecque. La liste des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences comprend \u00e9galement les menaces turques contre la forteresse d&rsquo;Otrante, en 1480, et la figure l\u00e9gendaire d&rsquo;Idrusa, une femme qui s&rsquo;est
