In the third quarter ended September 30, global demand for gold jewelry, measured by value, fell 15% year-over-year to $20.75 billion, according to provisional calculations by the World Gold Council. The decline is also due to the decline in the price of gold, because demand for gold jewelry, measured by weight, actually rose 5% to 486.7 tonnes, the highest level for the third quarter since 2010. In short, more gold jewelry is being sold around the world, but it is costing less. The weighted average price of gold for the third quarter fell 20% year-over-year to $1,326.30 per ounce. For those who don’t remember, an ounce is equal to 28.3 grams. The World Gold Council found, however, that demand for gold jewelry by value is up 6% to $77.3 billion.

There is also a financial component. Gold demand fell 37% to $37.04 billion, mainly due to sales by exchange-traded funds (ETFs), funds that specialize in investing in the yellow metal. Jewelry sellers should know that Chinese consumers generated the highest demand for gold jewelry, accounting for 34% of global demand for 24-karat gold. China’s demand for gold jewelry rose 3% by value to $7.34 billion in the third quarter. In contrast, gold demand in India fell 23% by weight, mainly due to government import restrictions. However, the World Gold Council found that despite this, gold demand was up 13% from the previous year. Also in India, demand for gold jewelry when calculated by value fell 38% year-on-year to $4.47 billion. Finally, demand for gold jewelry in the Middle East fell 12% to $1.65 billion, while in the United States it slipped 8% to $1.5 billion.
