There are women, in the great Asian country, who cover themselves with jewels until they carry ounces of metal on their bodies. A real effort. Farmers save their savings to buy the most flashy jewels. There are even those who buy gold rings to use them as knuckle dusters or magnates who offer gold to Hindu temples to balance their casual behavior in business. In 2011, India imported more gold than any other country in the world: about 1,000 tons, a fifth of the global annual supply. But shopping in this proportion is a recent phenomenon. In 1982, India consumed only 65 tons of gold. And until 1990, imports were almost banned. Gold had to be smuggled, and its price in India was about 50 percent higher than abroad. The typical buyer was a poor farmer in the South, for whom gold was an ancient currency to be stashed away for bad times. But deregulation has seen an explosion in buying. Today, bullion is bought by the wealthy, investors and speculators.
