In gold plating, instead, any metal can be used as a base, and the gold layer can be of various purity levels. Marco Dal Maso also points out that while the industry standards indicate that for high quality vermeil pieces the gold plating must be 14 carat or higher, the Maison exceeds the standard and uses 18 carats on all its vermeil items.
