This year, Age of Dinosaurs won, a piece created by the Japanese jeweler Ayano Nakajima with diamonds, rubies and, of course, boulder opal, a stone found in Australia. Nakajima said the inspiration for the necklace came to him after finding a rough boulder opal that contained the silhouette of a dinosaur. The jewel represents a “fire-breathing volcano, its lava flow is represented by black diamonds and rubies, while the dinosaur, movable by a spring, walks through the lush growth of prehistoric plants, created with green garnets”, he explained. Indeed the Winton area is known for its rich offering of boulder opal, as well as a number of dinosaur fossils.

Opale boulder

Obali boulder

Won a prize in a jewelry competition.
