You will hear about him: in the area of jewelry he’s already known for years. But, before you hear about him, look in these photos the extraordinary work he does, and read his story, it’s worth it. Because Alessio Boschi is an artist of the jewel, an uncommon creative, a fusion cuisine’s five star chef applied to gems and gold. His unique pieces, well finished and more, are at once an indictment to the establishment of the jewelry. For two reasons: the first one is that the work of Alessio Boschi opens up a prevailing conformism, even in fine jewelery. The second one is that he, Italian born and graduated in Rome, prides itself on using Asian craftsmanship «and believe me, there are works are almost impossible to get in Italy on grounds of cost and because they are relatively new», explains Alessio to Gioiellis. «One of these is the bazel setting in microscope with tiny stones that blend in different shadows of color: in Bangkok there is an excellent manufacture with more than twenty years of experience. In short, only in Asia there are so skilled artisans in this kind of job. Let’s be clear: I am not the only one. In fact, all the big names in jewelry, both Italian, and French and American, have produced in Asia at least part of their jewels. Only there they do not say it. Of course, in Italy there are others excellent, for example, there are engravers who perform millimetre fissures in the stone to enter a gold leaf so that the stone preserves its transparency: instead of covering the stone he works from the inside. So for the flowering Wisteria necklace, I had the milky aquamarine cut in petals in Bangkok, and then in Italy I had the gold foliage».

Alessio Boschi

Keep reading to see other extraordinary jewelry by Alessio Boschi
Power to the imagination

Here is another characteristic: the attraction for nature and the need to reproduce it in its true appearance. A vocation blossomed with the discovery of the works of Jar back in 2004, Boschi admits. Since then, after working for the Australian group Autore, «which taught me the sensitivity for color, accuracy in selecting the stones and above all, he made me realize the ability to talk jewels and their history. An attitude all Italian», and then for Italian Design and Ab Jewels, the designer has traveled the world including Australia and Hong Kong, and in a move that has somewhat shocked even his family, he decided to settle in Thailand. Its production, however, from a cultural point of view is absolutely European, Italian. The Asian skills, however, manifest themselves in the last details, like the paved colored gems shading: blue, less blue, light blue, less pale blue, white. Such virtuosity that few are able to play in jewels. Or in the selection of different shades of pearls, first of all a special category of baby Akoya, untreated and even uncolored, cultured in Vietnam and strung in Thailand, in fact. This year, Boschi was for the first time at Baselworld: its launch event. And he did it with a series of pieces that are concrete proof of his philosophy.

Plume earrings

Now take a look at what Alessio Boschi can do

One of his latest creations is the Renaissance set, earrings and necklace in homage to the Florentine Renaissance. And here too, there is a whole story behind «The idea of a necklace came out in the afternoon of two and a half years ago when walking in the Bangkok stones center, I saw in a small banquet of a Brazilian trader, three magnificent pieces of rubellite, with an amazing color, raspberry, extremely rare, and exceptional size. Plus, without inclusions, other feature very unusual for this kind of stone». Hence the inspiration to transform them into a jewel that simulates a stained-glass window: «Then, I thought I’d reproduce the Florence Cathedral. And here comes the Italian style». And in fact, in the two miniatures in the middle of the necklace, a micro mosaic carried out in Rome by a master craftsman of the Vatican, are depicted Brunelleschi’s dome and Maria de’ Medici. The whole is mounted on 18 strings of baby Akoya pearls ranging from rose, one of the finest colors, from white to 6.45 millimeters up to 2.5 millimeters, interspersed with rubellite’s beads. The same stone that also closes earrings miniatures depicting the Donatello’s David and the lily, symbol of Florence.

Collana Renaissaince, in oro bianco, perle Akoya e rubellite

Renaissaince, dettaglio collana aperta

Renaissaince, dettaglio collana chiusa

It was said that every piece has a story to tell, not only the most striking as a subject. How to give lightness to the jewel? With two fish, one made up of tsavorites and the other of blue sapphires, touching eachother with their tails, in order to surround the stone, especially the pavilion angle, and to harmonize the whole. Then, there is the color shaded scales: the famous Asian micro setting with the added difficulty of the gradient of the green, which unlike the blue is more trouble to achieve. Another detail: the eyes are in blue moonstone, first turned over and dug inside to include a black diamond, and then turned over and mounted as a pupil. Lastly, if that wasn’t enough, in the gallery, which is the set that holds the stone, there is the outline of an octopus.
