The sculpture jewels of Iwona Tamborska

Sculptor, artist, creator: define it as you like, but Iwona Tamborska, from Poland, is certainly not one of the many jewelry designers. Although she creates jewelry. They are, however, different objects, more like sculptures. She is keen to underline this aspect: her brand is called Rękami Stworzone, words that in Polish mean Created by hands. More precisely, she adds in her bio about her that she does not consider herself a jewelry maker, but more as a storyteller, with the difference that these tales are translated into silver and precious stones.

Stories that can be short, bittersweet fairy tales, which often have a hint of nostalgia for the passing of life and its meaning. But she, she adds, they have one thing in common: they are not just jewels. They are unique pieces created at the request of a client or forged in the Iwona workshop. With her work by her the Polish artist she was a finalist of the Saul Bell Design Award, after being invited to China, Australia, United Kingdom, France and Switzerland, at the 2022 edition of GemGèneve.

A symbol of peace for Vicenzaoro

War is raging, but the world of jewelry wants peace and not just for business. A feeling that will be represented at the next Vicenzaoro (17-21 March) by Give, a sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn, which will welcome visitors. The sculpture signed by the son of the great actor Anthony Quinn was placed in the square in front of the entrance to the fair. It represents the hand of a man joining that of a woman. His hands enclose an olive tree, which in the West is a symbol of peace. The map will also outline the paths of visitors inside the fair pavilions.

Given the times of war, a valuable initiative, even if the presentation does not explicitly mention the war and the invasion of Russia in Ukraine. A second installation by the artist, Gaia, dedicated to the precariousness of existence and flanked by a photographic exhibition, is hosted in the Palladian city as part of VIOFF, the Fuori Fiera di Vicenzaoro organized in collaboration with the municipal administration.

It is a great pleasure for me to exhibit in Vicenzaoro, an event capable of welcoming an international community and being a real melting pot of different peoples and cultures that share their ingenuity under the sign of creativity.

Arnaldo Pomodoro’s jewels

Arnaldo Pomodoro is one of the great Italian sculptors, who to date (2021) has reached the beautiful age of 95. For some time he has made many of his works available to the public at the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation (Via Vigevano 9, Milan), as well as online. But, in addition to having created impressive sculptures, Pomodoro in his long career also enjoyed designing necklaces, bracelets, rings, brooches, cufflinks, boxes, cigarette cases, small medals, made with the method of fusion on cuttlefish bone and with the ” addition of hammered threads, lumps of material, fine stones or rough stones, and more. Now Arnaldo Pomodoro’s online Raisonné Catalog is enriched with the new section dedicated to jewels. There are about 800 works, ornaments made mostly in a single copy, which testify the artist’s experiences in the field of goldsmithing since the 1950s, have been collected and documented for the first time, together with the drawings on paper made for their design.

Seeing today the images in sequence of all the jewels in the Raisonné Catalog moves me deeply; first of all because they are largely unknown works, not shown in exhibitions or illustrated in books and magazines. These small precious objects, which last for a long time unaltered and seem to contradict the incessant and inexorable passage of time, contain many ideas, references, experiences and present, so to speak, a repertoire of expressive elements of my own language. Examining them in the progression of their whole and in the details of each, they reveal correspondences and characteristics that refer to the unfolding of my research and my overall history as an artist.

The Raisonné Catalog online is a project in progress conducted by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation under the supervision of the artist: an immediate, free, always updated and precise consultation tool, aimed at scholars, cultural institutions and students, collectors, market operators, as well as that to the general public, who want to deepen their knowledge of the Master’s work. After the sections dedicated to Sculptures, Drawings, Multiples, Scenography and Jewelery, the catalog will progressively address all the other areas experimented by the artist with his work: Design Studies, Graphics, Applied Arts.

The publication of the section dedicated to jewels marks a further step forward in the research activities undertaken by the Foundation, pursuing a precise cultural policy of involving users in a mutual exchange of information, which over time will enrich both the online catalog and the database. of the Archive. Furthermore, from December 22nd, the Arnaldo Pomodoro online archive (a web portal, freely accessible) will be enriched with new materials useful for documenting and deepening the life and work of the Master, as well as the artistic and cultural history of the Twentieth century which saw him participate.
In particular, the materials of the Audiovisual section are doubled, in which it will now be possible to view about 50 films from 1964 to today, in full or preview form, acquired from cinematographic films, Vhs and DVDs, containing artist films, documentaries, interviews. , videos of the inauguration of works and exhibitions, various kinds of filming. Additionally, there are two new sections: Photographs and Different Materials.

From the Photographs section, a first selection of about 200 shots will be accessible, portraying Arnaldo Pomodoro on various occasions, with friends, artists, exponents of culture and institutions, often taken by great photographers such as Paolo Monti, Ugo Mulas, Maria Mulas and Carlo Orsi . The whole nucleus of about 150 posters of exhibitions and theatrical performances will be online in the Different Materials section, which will be followed, in the next releases, by the awards received by the artist and all those unusual and curious materials of various kinds, such as calendars, diaries, postcards.

Leigh Miller’s liquid sculptures

/

Quicksilver. Soft, liquid, natural. The jewelry by Leigh Miller is different from others. And they don’t cost much either. Everything was born (and continues) from her passion for sculpture. But that comes later. Originally from Santa Monica, a seaside town near Los Angeles, the designer graduated in fashion design from Otis College of Art and Design in the big Californian city. Then, she moved to New York, where she worked for some designers in the fashion industry. But without the creative outlet she imagined. About ten years ago she started thinking about what else she could do.

In the meantime she was engaged to a Brazilian and moved to Rio, where she attended the Atelier Mourao, a school founded in the sixties by the jeweler Caio Mourao. The jewelry, in reality, is a compromise. In the heart of Leigh Miller there is sculpture, a road, however, too uncertain. Better, therefore, to create small sculptures, but which can be sold immediately.

For her jewels she uses the lost wax casting technique, but with a personal style: she heats the wax, melts it and pours it on a surface, to obtain the shapes she wants. But she, she says, it is always up to the moon and the stars to decide how to melt the wax. She is also inspired by natural forms, such as a variety of marine stones. But without forgetting sculpture stars such as Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The jewelry is made from partially recycled sterling silver.

Laura Volpi between earth, air and movement

/

Laura Volpi, designer between sculpture and goldsmithcraft who experiments new ways ♦ ︎
Milan, city of design. It is also the city of Laura Volpi, a goldsmith who graduated in scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. Combining sculpture and jewelry, Laura Volpi has created a style that is a bridge between the two creativities. Or, better, it has the ability to create miniature and wearable sculptures. It is no coincidence that in his curriculum he cites specialization courses at the Tam Center with established artists such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Davide De Paoli, as well as his studies in London at the Slade School of Fine Art.
An example of his path is the collaboration with Côme Touvay, a French textile designer. Together with him, Laura Volpi presented a new jewel proposal: the Duetto bracelet, made of silver and fabric. She sculpts the silver elements, while he weaves these elements between them and stops them in the fabric, integrating with the plot the sense of movement given by the individual elements. The idea, according to the designer, is that of a «contemporary jewel that explores the sense of movement and fragmentation of images. The silver parts are single parts of a single image, visual fragments that evoke a unique shape, the weaving made of six strands (raw linen, silver thread, cotton, silk, mohair) interweaves the threads looking for a visual dynamicity some threads go back to the surface, suspended». In short, even language is more similar to that of art than to that of simple goldsmithing. Lavinia Andorno
