A new high jewelery ring signed by Sicis. Those who know the brand from Ravenna (Italy) know that the specialty of the house are micro mosaics: tiny glass tiles that are meticulously placed together to form figures and geometries on the jewels. In the high jewelery line, this ancient technique is accompanied by the use of gold and precious stones. As in the case of the last piece, called Bohemian Dream, in which diamonds coexist with the micro mosaic to form the pistils of a large flower. It is a unique piece, which is added to the other high jewelery creations.

Sicis jewels are considered among the most original and innovative in the jewelry scene. They are the result of the work of the Sicis creative director, Gioia Placuzzi, who joined the family business after graduating from Bocconi University in Milan in Business and Management and specialized in Marketing and Strategy at the Cass Business School in London. But, after a traditional managerial career within the Italian company, Gioia Placuzzi studied the secrets of precious stones and became a Free Gemologist at the Gemological Institute of America in London. Then, she started work with the Sicis Jewel division of the Italian company. In 2018 she became the creative director with the aim of growing the Sicis brand and business of jewelry and watchmaking, enhancing the special micromosaic atelier inside the company: a centuries-old technique that now lives a second youth.

Sicis fine jewelery, however, is not only micro mosaic, but also gold and precious stones, such as the bright marquise-cut rubellites used for rings and earrings, or amethysts or pavé diamonds. But the micro mosaic should not be underestimated: the shades of colors on the surfaces of the jewel are made with thousands of tiny fragments of glass created ad hoc: a job that can take hundreds of hours and an indefinite number of tests to find the right nuance.

Only Sicis Jewels, as far as we know, is able to use this technique, which is declined in jewels that are inspired by art deco, or give space to the creativity of the company’s designer. Tiny pieces of micromosaic in glassy paste, combined with precious stones and gold. It looks like an alchemic formula and, basically, it is. The tradition of mosaic, and then of micromosaic, is ancient. But it requires considerable manual skill, which only those with long experience can understand and translate into work. Even more so when it comes to jewels, such as those proposed by Sicis, a company based in Ravenna, a city that preserves wonderful Byzantine mosaics in its churches.

The new collection that uses the micromosaic technique is called Etoile and, it could not be otherwise, reproduces five-pointed gold stars, elaborated in the colors and shades of blue and black. The tiles, infinitely small, are enameled, hand-made by art masters who combine them one by one together with precious stones. They are composed in this way complex glue, or more simple, combined with laces, rings and earrings. M.d.B.

This time the Maison of Ravenna presents Universe, a line of jewelry that includes bracelets, rings and earrings made in gold, precious stones and micromosaic. In Ravenna there are some of the most precious mosaics in the world and the Italian city has preserved the tradition of the art of composing images with small tesserae.

The micromosaic makes appreciate this ancient art and combines it with the professionalism of goldsmiths.

The jewels made with this technique are, therefore, special not only for their shape, but also for the meticulous care with which they must be made. But even if the micromosaic refers to an ancient tradition, the Universe collection is tuned with our time. The jewelry line, in fact, was created with the creative contribution of Katerina Perez, a name known on the web among jewelry experts. Sicis’s micro mosaic is made in Ravenna, a city that houses some of the most famous Romanesque mosaics in the world. It’s not a casuality. Virtuosism in the realization of these micro mosaics manifests itself from time to time in the creation of fancy jewelery, where the merit is not only in the materials used, but also in the difficult to applying the technique to the high jewelery. After a series of animal-inspired jewels, now is a plant, the oldest in the world: the fern, which dates back some 350 million years ago. It is made up of hundreds of hand-laid worked micro-tiles, which form the leaves: a special spinning and cutting technique makes it possible to obtain shades of several colors a single splinter. On these soft shapes are cut emeralds drops-cut.
