The lightness of nature with Luisa Rosas

Luísa Rosas, Portuguese designer, heir to a tradition begun in 1860 ♦ ︎

In Portugal, in 1860, Mateus dos Santos Rosas started the activity of jewelry with a small workshop. His country of origin was Gondomar, a town near Porto, a land with coal and gold mines. And for this homeland of artisans, merchants, goldsmiths and jewelers masters. The Rosas family is still in business and runs jewelery stores with the David Rosas brand. But not only. The last descendant of the family, Luísa Rosas, almost 160 years later continues to bring to life the goldsmith tradition of the founder. Although, to be honest, the vocation of Luísa Rosas was architecture. Alongside her passion for designing environments, she decided to continue on the path of great grandfather and to create design jewels.

Another tribute to the origins is the choice to use yellow or pink gold for her jewels.

The shape of the jewels is often inspired by nature, but making irregular shapes simple and rational, with an aesthetic probably derives from the architectural design. She also aims very much at metal processing, which offers an experience also from a tactile point of view. For example, the Maison often uses the gold filigree technique to make the textures and architectures of the jewels lighter and brighter.

The small circles of Liliana Guerreiro

Liliana Guerreiro, the pleasure of design in Portugal ♦

Years ago she won the Best Piece of Jewelry Award at the Inhorgenta in Monaco thanks to her special design: an intertwining of threads and tiny circles that form gold and diamond jewelry. But not only. As in the Elementos collection, which uses the element of thread in an innovative way and small rounds that make up a sort of puzzle, or Malha (inspired by traditional nineteenth-century reliquaries), Cheio de Ramo (ironic use of filigree) and Fio , with the gold thread or in gilded silver used in different combinations of thicknesses, materials (gold and silver) and three textures.

Another peculiarity concerns the material it uses: 19-karat gold (instead of the usual 18-karat one), but also completely oxidized silver. Liliana Guerreiro is one of the best known Portuguese jewelry designers. She was born Viana do Castelo, Minho (north of Portugal), a land with a centuries-old history in the production of jewelry. Her work is inspired by one of the most traditional craft techniques, filigree.

Millionaire Jewelry Safe, the jewelry box wild West style

By choice or by constraint: if you have to spend time at home, why not order the jewels in a special jewelbox? There are many boxes, furniture and chests to hold the jewels. Not all, however, are like Millionaire Jewelry Safe, a safe-shaped box made by Boca do Lobo, a company from Porto (Portugal) founded in 2005. From the beginning Boca do Lobo has been committed to reinterpreting ancient techniques to create surprising pieces of contemporary design.

Millionaire Jewelry Safe, for example, is a piece inspired by the California gold rush of the early 1900s. The jewelbox is built in a gold-plated polished brass frame with dents that arouse interest and imagination, as if the mini safe was the result of an attempted robbery in the old West. It has a brass cogwheel mechanism, an imposing handle and, of course, it only opens through a secret combination. Inside, the surface is covered in velvet to preserve the most precious objects, such as your jewelry.

If you have a lot of jewels, but a lot of them, there is also a bigger version: the Millionaire Safe. In this case the old West-style safe is built with a mahogany structure and a gold-plated polished brass frame, always with different dents. It has one flaw: thieves may also like it.

Carlton’s luxury for all

//

Carlton Jewelry, company born in Portugal, proposes original jewels, but at affordable prices. Here are the first two collections, Leaf and Lisbon

In Coimbra, Portugal’s medieval city, they say they have studied the report of one of most world famous consulting firms, McKinsey. Company analysts have predicted that in the jeweler market in 2020, will be exponentially growing the brands that can offer jewelry between 500 and 1500 euros. And that’s what Carlton Jewelery aims to do, led by Carlos Góis grown in a family of Portuguese jewelers in the ancient city that in the Middle Ages was the capital of the country.

The challenge of Góis, who has studied economics, is to fit into that market segment where jewelry often does not have a Maison with a strong brand name. In short, Carlton has great ambitions: to propose quality jewelery in Europe, but at an affordable price. The collections presented at Baselworld follow this philosophy. Leaf, collection obviously inspired by the vegetable world, or Lisbon Lights, which also uses small diamonds such as would be the lights of the large metal bridge to illuminate rings, necklaces and bracelets.
