The precious passions of Selim Mouzannar

Almost all jewelers spend their time making jewelry. Almost. Some, like Selim Mouzannar, also engage in civil battles. The Beirut-based jeweler, in fact, is part of the Executive Committee of Achrafieh2020, a citizen-led environmental initiative to reinvent the Lebanese city’s historic Ashrafieh neighborhood as a sustainable and liveable space. Furthermore, he is one of the founders of Right to Nonviolence, an NGO engaged in legal activism and defense. Mouzannar, tells his biography, was involved in the non-violent revolution of the cedars of 2005 which forced the Syrian army to leave Lebanon.

But, of course, his main activity remains that of jewelry. He comes from a family of artisans originally from Damascus, and learned the art of working precious metals and gems in his father’s jewelry in the souk of Beirut, during the heyday of the cosmopolitan city. In 1980, during the civil war, Mouzannar went to study in Paris, where he graduated in mineralogy and gemology. He then worked for a jeweler based in Saudi Arabia and he moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where he dealt with gems.

In 1990 Mouzannar returned to Paris, where he acquired further skills in mineralogy from the Institut National de Gemmologie. Finally, he opened his Maison in Beirut, and in 2012 received a certification in Jewelry Design from the GIA Gemological Institute of America, followed by a certificate from the École supérieure des affaires (Beirut) Lebanon) in Marketing De Luxe in 2014. The jeweler is known for his crafting technique, known as Falamenk (means Flemish in Arabic), which combines rose-cut diamonds and silver-backed bezels.

The Gothic East by Ralph Masri

The young Lebanese designer Ralph Masri reinterprets the architecture of East and West in his jewelry

Why in the world there are countries and cities where there are more jewelers? One of these lucky places is Lebanon. Closed (fortunately) the long period of tensions between the different souls of the population, the jewelry making business has recovered, also strong of customers who arrive in Beirut from the Gulf emirates. So it is not surprising if in the city that was once defined as Switzerland of the Middle East are born new generations of designers. One of the most acclaimed is Ralph Masri.

His jewels were worn by women like Meghan Markle and Princess Rania of Jordan.

The designer has a degree in Bachelors of Art of the jewels of Central Saint Martin College in London. He then followed the internship in companies such Pomellato and Swarovski in London. Because in addition to drawing pleasant objects you have to know how to sell and organize work. He then studied how to use the creativity by a London jeweler, Scott Wilson, who specializes in maxi jewelry for the fashion world. But Ralph Masri has followed his path: his jewels are geometric, darting, simple and rich at the same time. For Arabesque Deco collection, for example, it was inspired by the motifs of the ancient buildings of the Middle East, while with Sacred Windows collection was inspired by the architectural lines of the Gothic cathedrals. To you the choice.

André Marcha’s jewels, fantasies in the ancient Phoenician land with the Drape collection ♦
He is a jeweler, son of jewelers, with jewelers sons and, from mother, nephew of famous jewelers like the Boghossians. Family traditions are important. Especially if you live and work in that country that was once called the Middle East Switzerland: Lebanon. Despite the difficulties that has crossed the ancient land of the Phoenicians, Beirut has always been the cradle of many jewelers of value, as André Marcha, now helped by his daughter Stephanie and his sons Bruno and Jeff, who work with him. Their kingdom is located inside the Hotel Phenicia, where for almost 20 years there is the shop with André Marcha standing ovation jewelry. However, his debut as a jeweler took place earlier in 1969. Do not think of an oriental style.

The jewels of the Lebanese Maison show that open fantasy that could have sprung from the mind of a London or Paris designer. As in the case of the Drape collection, in which gold and pavé of precious or colored stones are worked in such a way as to represent a moving fabric. A precious drape that is not only an original interpretation of pins and rings, but also a testimony of the goldsmith’s skill that is still in the country. Now the jewels of André Marcha can be found from Los Angeles to London, and sometimes even at Christie’s or Sotheby’s auctions. Family traditions are important also for this.

Tabbah’s princely jewels

/

The jewels of Tabbah, the Maison that made the jewels for the wedding of Charlene of Monaco ♦ ︎

In 20121, the Maison Tabbah has reached the age of 159 years. Not many companies produce jewelry that can boast such a long life. And the perspective to last also for more. Tabbah, in fact, enjoys international popularity: for example, in collaboration with Princess Charlene of Monaco, Nagib Tabbah designed and created the custom-made jewels worn during her marriage to Prince Albert II of Monaco. A beautiful advertisement for Tabbah, which is not based in Paris, but in Beirut, Lebanon. Tabbah, like many other jewelery brands, has two lines: jewelery made of gold and diamonds, and high jewelery with large precious stones and lots of imagination.

Founded in 1862, the Maison is a family run business run by Nabil and Nagib Tabbah. But the story is even longer if it dates back to the seventeenth century, when Tabbah was a silk printer with geometric patterns. More recently, a House of Tabbah boutique was opened in Beirut, on Allenby Street. And in 2019 the brand participated in the second edition of GemGèneve, with success.

The Nc Rocks geometries

Among abstract geometries and valuable inventions by Nc Rocks, jewelry brand born by the creativity of two women.
The 18K gold, precious stones, diamonds, enamel: who would have thought that these elements could be considered rock? But are the materials with which they are born of Nc Rocks jewelry, jewelry brand that has a different story from the usual. Born, in fact, from creativity of mother and daughter, Nadine Hammoud and Chérine Altobaishi. From Lebanon (Nadine was born in Beirut and raised in London) to Great Britain, from Saudi Arabia to Los Angeles (where she grew Chérine) via Dubai, where now the brand has seat: the cultural journey of the women couple did not borders. But has, instead, a specific style: geometric, with straight and round lines, bold colors, unusual combinations of spaces, among Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, two fathers of abstract art. But also virtuosism as Art Deco and even Optic Art. Nothing oriental, in fact. And the name? And the rock-and-roll? Difficult to understand why the choice of the brand, probably dictated only by marketing needs. There remain, however, jewels that have an undeniable personality. Alessia Mongrando
