The precious passions of Selim Mouzannar

Almost all jewelers spend their time making jewelry. Almost. Some, like Selim Mouzannar, also engage in civil battles. The Beirut-based jeweler, in fact, is part of the Executive Committee of Achrafieh2020, a citizen-led environmental initiative to reinvent the Lebanese city’s historic Ashrafieh neighborhood as a sustainable and liveable space. Furthermore, he is one of the founders of Right to Nonviolence, an NGO engaged in legal activism and defense. Mouzannar, tells his biography, was involved in the non-violent revolution of the cedars of 2005 which forced the Syrian army to leave Lebanon.

But, of course, his main activity remains that of jewelry. He comes from a family of artisans originally from Damascus, and learned the art of working precious metals and gems in his father’s jewelry in the souk of Beirut, during the heyday of the cosmopolitan city. In 1980, during the civil war, Mouzannar went to study in Paris, where he graduated in mineralogy and gemology. He then worked for a jeweler based in Saudi Arabia and he moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where he dealt with gems.

In 1990 Mouzannar returned to Paris, where he acquired further skills in mineralogy from the Institut National de Gemmologie. Finally, he opened his Maison in Beirut, and in 2012 received a certification in Jewelry Design from the GIA Gemological Institute of America, followed by a certificate from the École supérieure des affaires (Beirut) Lebanon) in Marketing De Luxe in 2014. The jeweler is known for his crafting technique, known as Falamenk (means Flemish in Arabic), which combines rose-cut diamonds and silver-backed bezels.

André Marcha’s jewels, fantasies in the ancient Phoenician land with the Drape collection ♦
He is a jeweler, son of jewelers, with jewelers sons and, from mother, nephew of famous jewelers like the Boghossians. Family traditions are important. Especially if you live and work in that country that was once called the Middle East Switzerland: Lebanon. Despite the difficulties that has crossed the ancient land of the Phoenicians, Beirut has always been the cradle of many jewelers of value, as André Marcha, now helped by his daughter Stephanie and his sons Bruno and Jeff, who work with him. Their kingdom is located inside the Hotel Phenicia, where for almost 20 years there is the shop with André Marcha standing ovation jewelry. However, his debut as a jeweler took place earlier in 1969. Do not think of an oriental style.

The jewels of the Lebanese Maison show that open fantasy that could have sprung from the mind of a London or Paris designer. As in the case of the Drape collection, in which gold and pavé of precious or colored stones are worked in such a way as to represent a moving fabric. A precious drape that is not only an original interpretation of pins and rings, but also a testimony of the goldsmith’s skill that is still in the country. Now the jewels of André Marcha can be found from Los Angeles to London, and sometimes even at Christie’s or Sotheby’s auctions. Family traditions are important also for this.

The roots in the two worlds of L’Atelier Nawbar

/

Beirut is one of the world centers of jewelry and not only for the Middle East. Indeed, a large part of the production of jewelry is destined for Western countries, as evidenced by collections tuned to European tastes. Like those of L’Atelier Nawbar, a small jewelery shop now in its fourth generation, located in the city center, not far from the port. It is a small family business that brings together design, production and showroom. The creation of the jewels is artisanal, but the distribution also takes place through the large e-commerce platforms and, therefore, manages to obtain an international stage.

The history of the jewelers dates back to 1891, when the great-great-grandfather of the current owners of L’Atelier Nawbar opened the first boutique in Beirut’s famous gold souk. But it also has its roots in London, where Elie, the father of the current heirs of the jewelry, Dima and Tania, had a boutique. The style of the Maison summarizes a fascination for art deco together with an echo for miniature, typical oriental art.
