The gems of Pamela Huizenga

The dance of the stones drives Pamela Huizenga fantasy: unique pieces with gems at the center of her creativity ♦

At 16, in Florida, Pamela Huizenga had already shown her passion for stones. The minerals were collected, as long as were a bit shining, and brought home. She did not suspect, though, that after a few years would become a well-known and appreciated designer. Actually there is a pause in her history: after studying the cutting of stones and the secrets of an accomplished artisan goldsmith in North Carolina, she was married and had three children.

But the passion for the stones has prevailed. The start of the conversion to jewelry designer was a bit casual, with the purchase of an Ethiopian opal on eBay. It was 2009. From this stone began the path that has turned into a jewelry professional, that only creates unique pieces. His creations are made between Florida, New York and Bali, where work an artisan woman specialized in the processing of silver pieces. Needless to say the center of its jewels include especially stones, especially those who have something special: turquoise, jade, opals of different types (Ethiopian or Mexican), but also fossils and petrified wood are the basic elements upon which you exercise the fantasy of Pamela. The prices of her jewels start at about $ 4,000.

China in Milan with Michela Bruni Reichlin

The jewels of Michela Bruni Reichlin, the Milanese designer with a Monte Napoleone style ♦

Daughter of a former ambassador to Beijing, with a prominent family behind, wife of a designer who works in New York (Riccardo Gambaccini): Michela Bruni Reichlin designs jewelry and sells them in his boutique in Milan. It is not just a simple street: it’s Via Monte Napoleone, one of the world’s luxury shopping streets. But the jewels of Michela Bruni Reichlin also have another aspect that distinguishes them: they are between East and West, the result of many trips to China in the period (late nineties) in which the father, Paolo Bruni, represented Italy. The experience in China is also the basis of some of the stylistic choices: for example, the use of jade, but also some of iconographic motifs, such as dragons or masks. It is not, however, a jewelry store that mimics an ethnic style, even though he loves the combination of semi-precious stones such as jade, agate, coral, onyx and turquoise with gold and diamonds.

In short, if she were a chef, the designer would proposes a fusion menu, with large variations: there are jewels that can be assimilated to luxury jewelery, up to those proposed to several thousand euro. Another aspect to be emphasized: all the earrings are made of two parts, an upper and a pendant. They are interchangeable jewelry, so as to multiply the combinations. Basically, if you buy two pieces if they get four. An optional that is appreciated, and not only by Milanese customers.

Everything about Jade

Quick guide to the most loved gemstone in the East, the jade, which also like in the West. Read how to learn to recognize jade (there isn’y only one) ♦

In China is the gemstone for excellence: the jade is a mineral ancient, valuable and widely used in jewelry. Now not only in the East, but also by many Western jewelers, who use the jades for their creations. But beware: the jade not all the same. Read this guide to learn more and get to know it.

Orecchini in oro, argento, con giada e tsavoriti

What is it. The term jade includes generally two different stones: jadeite and nephrite. The reason for this misunderstanding is because jadeite and nephrite mineral species that are difficult to distinguish. This ambiguity leads to confusion, especially to those who want to buy a jewel in jade. Nephritis was discovered long before Jadeite, about 5 thousand years ago, and was much appreciated by the Chinese emperors. The oldest jade objects found date back, however, about 7 thousand years ago in pre-Columbian era. Thanks to its hardness, nephrite was used as an ornament, but also for making tools. The nephritis is mostly green and white, with a color pale more than jadeite. In the jewelry industry, however, the word jade is often used as a generic term for nephrite and jadeite. Not only that: the term jade has also been applied to gems and ornamental materials that resemble jade, and sometimes even some artificial equivalents reminiscent of jadeite and nephrite. One more reason to be careful when buying a jade jewel.

In some cases, for the oxidation, also it reveals red and orange shades. It is a mineral abundant and widespread in the world: is located in Taiwan, California, Alaska, British Columbia, Wyoming, New Zealand and Russia. Jadeite is a stone chemically different, classified by the French mineralogist Alexis Damour in 1863. The jadeite has a much more vibrant color of nephrite, is more transparent, more rare and valuable, which is why it is used in jewelry.

The origin. The name jadeite from Spanish phrase “piedra de ijada” meaning stone side. It was believed that would serve to treat kidney stones when rubbed against the side of the body of the afflicted person. The Latin version of the name, lapis nephriticus, is the origin of the term nephritis.

Features. The jade color can range from white to pale apple green, deep green, but can also be blue-green, pink, lavender and a multitude of other rare colors. The color is largely influenced by the presence of trace elements such as chromium and iron. Its translucency varies: the jade can be opaque to nearly transparent. The jade is usually cut in cabochon beads or whether it is mounted on rings and pendants. It is widely used for small sculptures or tools. The coloring is often streaked or mottled: a characteristic that makes jadeite stones very aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, these streaks can be useful to carvers, who use them to create imaginative and intriguing effects.

Collana di giada e diamanti. Venduta per 7,1 milioni

The value. Nephritis is less appreciated, unless they make up a very old object. The actual value depends on the processing of the material. In general, the nephritis has not a huge demand when it comes to jewelry and has not the same value of jadeite. When buying jade you must pay attention to the quality, determined by the degree of translucency, transparency and purity of color. One of the most popular variety is the black jade. But often the black jade is actually nephritis, much more abundant and not so expensive. Occasionally, other minerals like serpentine or quartz are sold as jade. At the time the request is made more jade mines of Burma: the great demand, especially from China, has pushed up the price.

What to pay attention to. It seems incredible to say, but there are those who sell fake jade jewelry, which is actually plastic. Sure, it’s a very hard and refined plastic, but it’s not real jade. How to avoid cheating? The first rule is to beware of selling jade jewelry at a very low price. Don’t be fooled by special offers or, worse, by jewels of dubious origin: they are almost always scams. In China, for example, there are state-owned stores authorized to sell jade. Of course, the price is much higher …

Yewn, art jewelry with roots in ancient Chinese culture

///

What is the border between jewelry and art? It depends. In the case of Hong Kong jeweler Yewn, the border does not exist. Her jewels, unique pieces, are made to be worn only occasionally and, on the contrary, to be admired often. Since the end of the Chinese monarchy in 1911, the Maison says, Chinese jewels had been a rare sight, not only in the rest of the world, but also in greater China. Yewn aims to continue the Chinese millennial tradition with contemporary jewelry that neither the past nor the present Chinese generations have ever seen before.

Dickson Yewn, Yewn’s creative director, in fact, creates works of art to wear. With a slow, meticulous manufacturing process, he make jewels using a sophisticated artisanal process that resembles the works produced by imperial artisans and which are now exhibited in Chinese museums. In short, more than a jeweler, Dickson Yewn is an artist fascinated by the traditions of ancient China. Until 1995 Dickson was a full-time painter. Then, almost by chance, he started designing high jewelry for his clients.

Among other things, the word Yewn is the name of the designer, but also a play on words: in Chinese it sounds like affinity and luck. And this symbolism is also deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy and culture, which is found depicted in the large recycled wood bracelets, with floral patterns and bas-relief figures. For example, the brooch representing the Golden Kaiserihind butterfly (male), Teinopalpus aureus in Latin, was made with rosewood front and rear wings, yellow sapphire, tsavorite garnet, black and white diamond, white gold, sterling silver ribs. , head and antennae in onyx, tsavorite garnet, black diamond, rhodium-plated black gold. Finally, the chest and abdomen are set with black diamond, yellow sapphire, tsavorite garnet, rhodium-plated articulated black gold, the apex and rib margin in rosewood and on the back and brooch are black rhodium-plated gold, yellow gold.

MWParis among East and West

The atmospheres of the myths of East and West in the unusual jewels of MwParis by Thu-Thao Le Thi
She is named Thu-Thao Le Thi and she is a Parisian designer. For truth, she was born in Japan, but grew up in Vietnam, and more, she went to Italy, to Brazil and, finally, in France. All these moves, this blend of cultures, artistic influences, traditions, are reflected in its jewels, produced with the brand MWParis. As if the experience in several countries is not enough, she describes herself as a passionate archeologist (ever since she was a child).

Classical also the materials used: yellow gold, as in antiquity, in addition to precious and semi-precious stones. Unusual the names of jewels. There are, for example, God of the solar disc in ancient Egypt (rings), the necklace dedicated to a tropical shrub, the Aliantus Altissima, with a valuable leaf-shaped jade, the Movere ring, duality between day and day the night. Giada beats diamonds at Sotheby’s auction

Top and flop at the high jewelery auction organized by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. In summary: disappointment with precious stones, enthusiasm for jade. Overall, however, the sale of Magnificent Jewels totaled over $ 39.2 million, which is no small amount. To disappoint, in particular, were jewels considered the bestq pieces. Starting with the ring with a 118.88 carat unheated cushion cut Royal Blue Burmese sapphire, ranked at the top of its category. The jewel was withdrawn without being sold. Identical destiny for a vivid blue diamond with a flawless pear-shaped interior of 4.84 carats, set in a platinum and rose gold ring next to two brilliant-cut diamonds. Estimated at $ 8.4 million, it found no buyers

And not sold were also two pear-shaped disassembled diamonds weighing 15.83 and 15.25 carats, estimated at 2.5 million. So far the flops. But the successes are also to be recorded. Jade, a stone that is legendary in Asia, got its revenge with a necklace of 43 imperial jadeite pearls, a name reserved for the highest quality stone, which sold for 8.1 million dollars. But, in truth, a 5.22-carat brilliant-cut fancy deep blue diamond, set on a platinum and white gold ring, also sold for 4.4 million, just above its highest estimate.

Success also for a 6.41-carat unheated pigeon blood-colored Burmese ruby, mounted on an 18-karat yellow and white gold ring and surrounded by diamonds, designed by Forms, a high-end jewelery house in Hong Kong. The jewel was sold for 2.8 million dollars. Somewhat surprisingly, however, an 18-karat white and rose gold ring designed by Nicholas Lieou was not awarded, with a 24.88-carat jadeite cabochon paired with a 2.08-carat fancy vivid oval purplish pink diamond . Er estimated to be up to $ 1.9 million. Federico Graglia

The new Art Deco by Roberto Coin

//

Art deco is one of the styles most used by jewelers, as evidenced by the historic collection of Roberto Coin. Perhaps not everyone knows that the name is a synthesis of Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, an event which was held in Paris in 1925 and which gave birth to this style that enhances geometric shapes. A fashion that, in particular, was in vogue in America until 1940. And that left deep traces in the world of jewelry.

Launched a few years ago with a good reception from the public, the Roberto Coin Art Deco collection has continued to renew that style made of zigzag lines, wide curves, pointed corners and soft tassels. The latest pieces have only been presented recently, but more or less every year the Venetian Maison adds some novelties. These are rings that do not go unnoticed, with tassels and inserts of black jade, malachite, mother of pearl and diamonds. Last year rings, earrings and pendants were added with diamonds and malachite or fossil coral: an unusual material, which presents on the surface like small inflorescences. Art Deco, in short, but completely original.

Two lavender jade bracelets, on the other hand, are so precious that they will be sold separately. The maximum sales estimate is close to $ 900,000 each.

Jewels against mosquitoes

Here are bracelets and necklaces with jade, onyx and lemongrass: they keep mosquitoes away ♦

To believe or not believe in the ancient superstitions? Some people have built a business by supporting the thesis that the stones used in jewelry have magical properties. All to prove, though. And why only you can’t choose a stone because it’s aesthetically pleasing? Who knows! For example, the Chinese traditionalists believe green jade can ward off evil spirits. Maybe. But now the green jade can rightfully boast a proven properties: chase away mosquitoes. Or rather, I can serve this purpose as the jewelry collection Yu Ahn, launched in Singapore (the page can be found here). The collection includes two bracelets and two different types of necklaces in silver and jade. In these classic of jewelery elements is added a small ball with citronella oil, able to remove the annoying mosquitoes for a week. Sotheby’s, a ruby is the winner

In Hong Kong the Sotheby’s auction in the sign of rubies and diamonds, the jade flop ♦ ︎
There are no longer the seasons of the past and not even the collectors of the past. Sotheby’s top lot at the Hong Kong auction, the perfect Circle of Heaven jade bracelet, did not find a buyer at the Magnificent Jewels auction, which totaled $ 48.6 million. The bracelet was valued at between 10.2 and 12.8 million dollars, but did not reach the minimum required. And to say that, according to Chinese tradition, jade is the “stone of paradise” which, together with the circular shape, provided the bracelet with a patent of perfection. The initial estimate is too high, obviously.
But it was not the only auction flop. A diamond of brilliant color, impeccable, of 17,63 carats, estimated at 2,8 million, was unsold, as a Cartier ring with a 14.72 carat brilliant cut Colombian emerald and brilliant cut diamonds (estimate up to 1.4 million) and even a ring with a 14.18 carat fancy blue diamond surrounded by rose diamonds, estimated at between 5.9 and 7.6 million dollars.
But of course, there were also jewels sold well. The most quoted was found to be a ring with a Burmese cut-cushion ruby weighing 24.70 carats, set in a pear-shaped diamond outline. And with a stem covered with a pavé of brilliant cut pink diamonds. It was sold for 11 million, as expected. In second place for value, there are a pair of pear cut diamond earrings sold for 3 million dollars, while a ring with fancy yellow 30.16 carat diamond has totaled 2.8 million and a pink-violet diamond-cut cushion of 5 carats was awarded for 2.5 million. Finally, a ring with a vivid yellow-orange diamond with an emerald cut of 10.30 carats, set between two tapered baguette diamonds, found a buyer for 1.4 million. Federico Graglia

This is the Circle of Heaven

/

A rare jade bracelet, great classic jewelry and Ashley Judd’s earrings at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong ♦ ︎
The great auctions come back with great jewels for big wallets. Everything is great at Sotheby’s auction on April 3rd in Hong Kong. For enthusiasts collectors of the Orient, the “highly translucent” jadeite bracelet will certainly be exciting, considered the most precious piece of the Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction. Sotheby’s has the aim of selling pieces for $ 93.6 million.
The assessment of the simple circle ranges from 10.2 to 12.8 million dollars. The most expensive round in history, perhaps. The bracelet also has a name: The Circle of Heaven. It has a full color, emerald green with “fine texture”. The name, apart from the perfection of the geometric form, derives from the fact that in China the tradition considers jadeite as the Stone of Heaven.

Wallace Chan is a legend in the world of jewelry and more. Born in a poor family in Fuzhou in 1956 and moved to Hong Kong at the age of five. After a long apprenticeship, in 1987, he devised a method for sculpting figures inside a stone. The technique uses carvings as in cameos to create an image that is then reflected within the gem and creates a three-dimensional effect. As in the jadeite in the shape of a horse’s head, with white diamonds, yellow pink and brown, crystal, tsavorite garnet, on titanium: a piece not to be missed and which you see photographed on this page.
At Tefaf, in any case there are other pieces of unusual jewelry, such as the necklace with citrine signed Andrew Grima, or the ring with the Cassiopea diamond of 4 carats, part of the collection of Amy Burton. Federico Graglia

Two cocktails for Roberto Coin

Two new cocktail rings for Roberto Coin. They use jade and malachite next to gold and diamonds ♦ ︎

It is well known that the cocktail ring was invented by the flapper, the new generation of women who in the 1920s, during Prohibition in the United States, began to use shorter skirts, shorter hair, listen to jazz music, and in general to show off their contempt for the good manners. Attitude that included wearing fancy rings, much larger and brighter than normal solitaire or simple wedding rings. The concept of cocktail ring was then elaborated to become a jewelery type. Rings that you see, with generous sizes. But, of course, every designer has his way of interpreting cocktail rings. Like Roberto Coin, a Venetian designer with an international passport, has added new cocktail rings to his catalog: the jewel of maxi proportions is reinterpreted through a universe of shapes and nuances that use the colors of jade and malachite next to diamonds and gold. The precious Jade by Yaochijiqing

The jade carved into precious jewels, now also for Western women is the Yaochijiqing Group bet.
Jade is the favorite stone in the East. In China, jade is the object of a cult. Read also Everything about jade
Now the jade in its maximum expression arrives at Baselworld by the Chinese company Yaochijiqing Group, founded by Liao Xiaofeng and engaged in the jewelry industry jade, as well as sculptural objects. It uses, in particular different types of stone (it does not exist only one variety) the Xiuying Jade, Hua Jade and Jade Hemo. The Yaochijiqing Group also owns a mine that produces the rare quality, the Xiuyan Jade. The group has expanded over time and now makes the leap on the Swiss stage. For this reason, next to products that follow the Chinese tradition, such as jade carved with figures or flowers, it offers jewelry that should also meet the Western taste. They are always very elaborate, but certainly different from those a bit ‘too traditional that characterize the rest of the production. At Baselworld, Yaochijiqing presents, among other things, a set of jewelry from the name Lotus pond, described as a gold medal at the first design competition Yuyao Prize jewelry. For the jade lovers an opportunity not to be missed. Federico Graglia

Mitsuo Kaji, new enamels are coming

New jewels are coming from Mitsuo Kaji, the artist of the Japanese jewelery.
For 2017 Mitsuo Kaji has prepared a new line of jewelry that combines Eastern and Western culture, which combine in the French and Japanese lacquer enamel miniatures. And soon, announces, will launch a new line of jades, unique by number of varieties and colors.
Not everyone in the West know the capacity of this brilliant artist of the jewel. Running from a clear concept: “The jewels that are loved continue to shine for more than 100 years.” In short, jewelery (but this word is an understatement to call them) able to withstand time thanks to their beauty, like a painting or a sculpture.
To get to create pieces so unusual, Mitsuo Kaji organized a double cross: East and West, the Ancient and the Modern. The result is an original and elaborate style but, alas, one sipped production. He, however, has not intention to give up this way of understanding the jewels. Indeed, he himself is a collector of Japanese antique jewelry, according to him too little known to the general public. An idealist? A Zen philosopher? A goldsmith’s art monk? None of this: in 1964 Mitsuo was a pop singer, and has recorded hit records. But, at the request of his father, who had a jewelry-watch store in Osaka, he has retired from the music world and has begun to manage the family business. The key change has been his degree at Gia, in the United States, to which he added a specialization in Emaux, enamels. So from the success in the Japanese pop Mitsuo Kaji has found success in the art of jewelry. Giulia Netrese

Flamenco for Annoushka Ducas

The British designer Annoushka Ducas dedicates to flamenco his latest collection.
The charm of Andalusia, its colors and its music: the flamenco. It is not often that the jewels are inspired by music: flowers and animals are the most frequented stylistic formulas. Flamenco, however, it now inspires British designer Annoushka Ducas (we have already spoken here) with a collection. Driven by memories and friendships, but above all by the rhythm music of Southern Spain, the designer decided to transform as jewels the fan moved with grace and voluptuousness by flamenco dancers. Diamonds and jade or pink mother pearl are among the elements used for this set of earrings, bracelets and necklaces, mounted in white gold and black rhodium. To soften strong colors of the Iberian land, in short, Annoushka Ducas chose the pastel shades. Prices: a bracelet in white gold, diamonds and mother of pearl costs 39,000 pounds. Earrings with diamonds and jade 13,500 pounds. Alessia Mongrando
