The V Rai jewels with laboratory diamonds

The laboratory-created diamond jewels of the American brand V Rai have a special history. They are made with the fruit of the production of the American company Diamond Foundry, which produces diamonds using the method of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The company was founded in 2015 and among its investors there was also Leonardo DiCaprio, a veteran of the film Blood Diamond, convinced in supporting a technological way to diamond. And Vrai is the Da Diamond Foundry-backed, consumer-facing jewelry brand. The brand has collaborated with Balmain, Givenchy and Dover Street Market. Now launches the V jewelry collection.

With V, I wanted the design to focus on the setting rather than the multitude of diamond cuts normally available in our collections. I hope you offer V Rai customers a highly distinctive, elegant yet bold look that feels like a bold celebration of your authentic style, with every edgy line reflecting the individuality of the wearer.
Mona Akhavi, president of V RAI.

The jewels of the V RAIVè collection are characterized by angular lines and a setting that uses the V shape, which houses brilliant-cut laboratory diamonds and alludes to the brand logo. The company, which sells online worldwide, also highlights the introduction of the Flex bracelet, the first with spring wire, which flexes easily to allow for easy wear. The tennis necklace and the choker both have invisible clasps: a solution that highlights the design.

Vrai’s green choice

For some years the world of jewelry has been divided in two: on the one hand those who support the use of artificially created diamonds with sophisticated machinery, on the other those who do not want to give up natural diamonds, extracted from the earth. Vrai is a jewelry brand that has chosen to use diamonds created in the laboratory. At the base is the initiative of Martin Roscheisen, an Austrian-American entrepreneur. Roscheisen was among the first to understand the commercial potential of the Internet in the late 1990s, and he was also one of the first Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to focus on green energy technology. In 2015, Roscheisen launched Diamond Foundry, with backing from Leonardo DiCaprio, and in November 2016, Diamond Foundry bought jewelry brand Vrai.

The brand is keen to underline the green aspect: Vrai diamonds are produced by Diamond Foundry in Wenatchee, in the State of Washington, USA, using 100% hydroelectric energy. The company has been Carbon Neutral certified since 2017. Vrai’s jewels are made of 14-karat gold, with a modern, fairly simple design. The 14 carats together with laboratory diamonds allows prices to be contained: a gold ring with a 0.5 carat stone, sold online, is offered at around 1500 dollars.

A ring made from a single diamond, even if artificial. It is designed by the designer father of iPhone, iMac, iPad … This exceptional creation will be on sale on December 5 in Miami, in an auction organized by Sotheby’s. The proceeds will go to charity, for an organization, Red, which deals with AIDS patients.

The ring was designed by Apple’s chief design officer, Sir Jony Ive, in collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newsom.

The artificial diamond, on the other hand, was produced by Diamond Foundry. The ring has no metallic part. Diamond Foundry is the leading American producer of stone produced in the laboratory and aims to present itself as a sustainable company. It boasts the star of Blood Diamond and among the shareholders there is Leonardo DiCaprio, who was the protagonist of a film about the extraction of illegal diamonds.

The diamond used for the ring is about 45 carats, one of the largest laboratory stones in the world.

The ring, however, does not yet exist: if a buyer is found, the rough diamond created in the laboratories of the Bay Area of Diamond Foundry will be sent to master cutters in Antwerp to be customized to the extent of the finger of the new owner.
To realize the ring’s design, which has 2-3,000 almost microscopic facets, Ive and Newsom have also designed special tools, including a device that will project a laser beam through a micrometric water jet to create the cylindrical cut of the interior ring. The price? Among 150000 and 250000 dollars. Cosimo Muzzano

The diamonds war

It broke out the diamonds war. Producers of synthetic gems against those who support natural stones. It is not just a matter between companies, because it touches on topics that interest all those who own diamond jewelry and have so far thought to have in the drawer a value that remains unchanged over time, or even increases. The story is told in a long article by Jck, you find here.
Step back
Some time ago we told of Diamond Foundry, a company that produces synthetic diamonds through a complicated and expensive new technology and processes and has Leonardo DiCaprio as shareholder. The stones are so similar to authentic diamonds that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish them from the originals. The affair has deeply angered the world’s foremost expert in diamonds, Martin Rapaport. He is a guru establishing prices and trends, plans and influences of the most coveted gems market. Rapaport, then lashed out at Diamond Foundry, with an article that is well worth reading: «The scam of synthetic diamond». The first argument against the spread of artificial stones, as aesthetically perfect, concerns the ethical value supported by the company that produces them.
Not true, says Rapaport, that synthetic diamonds are more ethical than natural ones. For example, because they steal work to poor people that is extracting the authentic ones. I mean, who it says that synthetic diamonds are more ethical is a liar. A point very sensitive because the synthetic diamond does not cost much less than the original ones and are offered by marketers with an ethical value more to convince possible buyers in the choice.
Then there is a second point: natural diamonds have always been an investment that lasts over time, while the price of synthetic ones is destined to go down in time, given that the production costs will drop as with all related objects technology. On this point, however, Jck has an argument: first, it is said that synthetic diamonds must necessarily fall in price. Second, it is not even said that those natural keep unchanged their value forever.
DiCaprio answers
The story is not over. Diamond Foundry, in fact, responded in kind: first, create perfect gems in the laboratory is and will remain very expensive, so the price of synthetic diamonds will not fall. In addition, according to the company, Rapaport is simply a pawn in a ‘cartel’ occult diamond producers. Finally, the company that has DiCaprio (remember his film Blood Diamond?) among the others owners, take a challenge. It proposes to Botswana to build there a plant that produces synthetic diamonds, to compensate the loss in sales of diamonds. Difficult, however, that the idea can really get into the harbor. Remain the controversy, high carat. Federico Graglia

Diamonds of Leonardo DiCaprio

Do you remember Blood Diamond, with starring Leonardo DiCaprio? Be ‘, they must have impressed quite the actor, who just turned 41 years old. So much so that Leo decided to enter as a partner in a new company that produces synthetic diamonds. In short, diamonds socially aware. “I’m proud to invest in Diamond Foundry — reducing the human and environmental toll of the diamond industry by sustainably culturing diamonds without the destructive use of mining”, ruled DiCaprio.
The company is called Diamond Foundry and is headquartered in California. It is a laboratory of high technology, where diamonds are created atom by atom with a new process based on plasma, with virtually no carbon dioxide emissions. The procedure was developed by engineers at MIT in Boston, Stanford University and Princeton. High temperatures can to recreate the conditions in which carbon has been converted into diamond by nature. You can then buy individual diamonds, but not only. The company turned to 24 independent designers to create collections of jewelry with diamonds, in a range of between $ 200 for a stainless steel ring, to 15 thousand dollars to earrings with gold.
