At the zoo with Marc Alary

Monkeys, antelopes, elephants: the wild (but gentle) animals of the French designer Marc Alary ♦ ︎

Crocodiles, monkeys, elephants: the Marc Alary zoo, French jewelry designer born in New York, is really unusual. Its animals are exotic, but have a kind of Parisian boulevard elegance. In fact, Alary grew up in Toulouse, but moved to Paris to study Graphic Design & Illustration at the Ecole Supérieure de Design, d’Art Graphique and d’Architecture Intérieure. He then moved to his city of birth, New York, to work on prints, graphics and design of T-shirts for Dkny, Louis Vuitton (where he also designed embroidery) and Marc Jacobs, designing everything from graphics, clothes, jackets shirts and jackets, to the design of hardware for bags.

Alary left Marc Jacobs in autumn 2011, after a brilliant internal career, to focus on his company.
The debut collection, with animals in gold and precious stones, entitled Ménagerie, is inspired by childhood, an age in which even the wildest animals are friends to talk to. Elephants, panthers, zebras and flamingos are made of platinum gold and diamonds, sapphires, rubies and tourmalines. And the monkeys, with their moving limbs, clasp the rubies with tails and hands.

The designer Kieselstein-Cord offers a mini collection dedicated to the crocodile ♦ ︎

Kieselstein-Cord is a luxury and lifestyle brand founded by artist designer and photographer Barry Kieselstein-Cord in Manhattan in 1972. Aside from the commercial production of the brand (bags, buckles, accessories), Kieselstein-Cord’s work can also be found in the permanent collections of many museums, from the Louvre to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and, in his time, Andy Warhol collected its objects.

Kieselstein-Cord has also decided to collaborate with Kuck, an important jeweler from Düsseldorf founded in the seventies by Angelika and Olaf Kuck, who also wanted to add an Artist Collections to his proposals. And here is the series of jewelery with pure gold (18 carat) crocodiles, which is a re-edition of a work from the 1980s. The nuance of pure gold is almost tending to green, just to remember the shade of the crocodile skin. The small series of jewels includes an opening bracelet (it has a zipper) and a necklace.

The crocodile jewels are not, however, the only production of Kieselstein-Cord. There are other collections, such as Elements Diamonds, which express a remarkable goldsmith virtuosity, combining gold with precious stones, in a neo baroque style. Alessia Mongrando

The new Cartier crocodiles

An exceptional set of high jewelry signed by Cartier, with 14 Colombian emeralds ♦ ︎

A piece of jewelry that made history has inspired a new exceptional Cartier parure. This is a suite composed of necklace, ring and earrings inspired by the famous necklace made by Cartier in 1975 for the Mexican actress María Félix.

The high jewelry set has a set of 14 emeralds from Colombia.

The emeralds of the jewels, which reflect the shape of the crocodile, weigh a total of 46.45 carats. They are stones considered out of the norm, that is of exceptional beauty and uniformity. To the 14 large emeralds used, they are added with the shape of pearls, always of an intense green color. Also the sculptural aspect of the jewels is valuable, with the crocodile that seems ready to bite those who approach (but it will not happen). Not only that: by stretching the back part towards the tail, the pieces of the necklace can be wrapped around the neck, wrist or finger, or be suspended like a pair of dangling earrings. The legs of the animal, like its scales, have been specially designed to be comfortable even in contact with the skin.

This high jewelry crocodile is inspired, as mentioned above, in the necklace created in 1975 for María Félix.

It is a piece that is now part of the history of the Maison, in the Cartier Collection. The necklace consisted of two completely articulated crocodiles, one with emerald pavé and the other with yellow diamonds. In addition to gold, for this necklace we have used 1023 fancy bright brilliant-cut diamonds of 60.02ct, two cabochon emeralds (eyes), another 1060 emeralds, total weight of 66.86ct, two cabochon rubies (eyes) . Each crocodile is completely articulated and can be worn like a brooch. Lavinia Andorno
