A sculptor-jeweler who comes from the Asian steppes until to Florence: Dashi Namdakov was born in the village of Buryat Ukurik, in the Chita region of Russia. His full name is Dashinima (the Buryat language Dashi Nima), which means Lucky Sun in Buryat language. Dashi’s family has roots in a clan of ancient and honorable tradition of blacksmiths Darkhan. Incredibly Dashi after his studies became a sculptor, but also a creator of jewelry. Unique items, reflecting in rings, pendants and bracelets the mystery of the great expanses of the Mongolian desert, the animism of nomadic peoples, the primitive style and essential. With years Namdakov was successful and he moved to Moscow in 2004. He has exhibited his works, large and small, in museums around the world. His sculptures are preserved in the vaults of the Hermitage museum and houses of great private collectors. Her jewels are as mysterious as the sculptures: for example, the pendant depicting a chameleon, with sinuous curves spanning a cabochon amethyst. or ring depicting an elephant, studded with precious stones. The jewels of Namdakov are inspired by his birthplace, remote borderlands between Russia and Mongolia, where the dominant cultures are Buddhism and the shamanic mythology, legends Buryats, and the ancient arts of China and Japan. “Usually I take care of jewelry after working on large sculptures,” he explained. “I’m so tired physically to work on major projects (sometimes my muscles make me very badly and I’m not able to bend your back), while working with small objects is relaxing. Be both a sculptor and a jeweler has allowed me to make a very personal style.” The works of Dashi Namdakov can be admired in Florence until July 25.
