Der damals f\u00fcnfundf\u00fcnfzigj\u00e4hrige und damit nicht wehrpflichtige Albert Stopford war ein fester Bestandteil der St. Petersburger Gesellschaftsszene und der Intimste der Adligen. Die Geschichte des Schmucks ist ziemlich abenteuerlich. In Arbeiterkleidung holte Stopford heimlich die Juwelen aus dem Haus der Gro\u00dfherzogin, dem Vladimir Palace, einem 360-Zimmer-Geb\u00e4ude an der Newa, das noch nicht von Randalierern gepl\u00fcndert wurde. Durch eine Seitent\u00fcr betreten und von Maria Pawlownas \u00e4ltestem Sohn Boris und einem vertrauten Diener eskortiert, zerlegte Stopford die Juwelen, faltete sie zu ihrem Schutz in alte Zeitungen und machte sich auf den Weg. In drei N\u00e4chten erreichte er den Kurort Kislowodsk im Kaukasus, wo sich Maria Pawlowna in ihre Sommervilla zur\u00fcckgezogen hatte. Am 26. Die Juwelen wurden daher von ihrer Tochter, Prinzessin Elena von Griechenland und D\u00e4nemark (1882-1957) und dann an ihre Nachkommen geerbt.
