Bis vor kurzem zu einem Preis verkauft, der nur geringf\u00fcgig unter den Natursteinen lag, wurden synthetische Diamanten durch die Vermarktung von Produzenten als ethische Produkte getrieben. Um synthetische Diamanten herzustellen, muss man keine Berge graben, Land bewegen, Bev\u00f6lkerungen der Dritten Welt mobilisieren. Man k\u00f6nnte jedoch argumentieren, dass zur Herstellung synthetischer Diamanten ein Strom ben\u00f6tigt wird, der nicht aus nichts entsteht, sondern aus Kraftwerken, die \u00d6l, Kohle oder Uran verbrauchen. Und dass die Arbeit des Bergarbeiters gef\u00e4hrlich und anstrengend ist, aber f\u00fcr manche Bev\u00f6lkerungen immer besser ist als nichts.<br \/>\nIn jedem Fall startete De Beers im September seine Schmuckmarke Lightbox mit k\u00fcnstlich hergestellten Diamanten und beschrieb die Entscheidung in seinem neuesten Finanzbericht als Erfolg. Andere Hersteller von synthetischen Diamanten haben jedoch die von De Beers entwickelte Strategie in Frage gestellt und der Marke vorgeworfen, unter den Kosten zu verkaufen.
