All about amethyst

The stone of February is the amethyst. But this gem also it like in the other 11 months of the year. Discover the qualities of the amethyst in this article ♦
Has always been considered a sort of talisman: Sumerians and Babylonians and Egyptians wore amulets made with amethyst for protection, and for the ancient Chinese was a material with which to store spices, healing balms and ointments. In nature this variety of quartz is found inside of stony masses and quarries, geodes, crystals containing groupings. One of the most famous is the one discovered in Brazil in the area of Rio Grande Sol, 30 meters long and 15 meters completely covered with amethyst crystals width, so large that it must be dug in the ground. Amethyst is also the stone of February.

The color range. It is truly remarkable, ranging from light pink to deep purple with many intermediate shades, as the example lavender or lilac, christened Rose de France, or the darkest shade almost bluish shades from red or pink typical of the stones from Russia , whose mines are now exhausted. Then there are amethysts Uruguay and Arizona with a deep blue-purple, the Zambian light purple. All owe their color to iron impurities. Some are two-tone, gold and purple, are called ametryne, and consist of quartz citrine and amethyst. Others, are green and are baptized prisiolite.

Origin. There are many mineral sources, practically in almost all over the world, but the most important producers are Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar and Zambia. A good quality stones are also found in the United States, South Korea and Austria.

Rating. Until the 18th century it was considered a precious gem as much as a diamond, a sapphire, an emerald or a ruby. The most valuable specimens came from the Ural Mountains of Russia, but the discovery of large deposits in Brazil and other countries has largely decreased the price. Currently the main evaluation criterion is the color: the more intense and more uniform the quality. Attention to the nuances, must be neither brown nor gray.

Purity. It is a gem of type II, so it can have slight inclusions visible to the naked eye but if its dark color hides, it becomes more difficult in the pink variety, lavender or green. It is often found in large, it can be up to 20 carats, and is almost always natural because the heat treatment and thus the cost of such a convenient stone does not make sense.

The beautiful but strange jewels

The most surprising jewels: from the diamond glove to the pavé handcuffs ♦

Strange jewels. There are not only the classic pearl necklaces, or the solitaire ring: designers and jewelers occasionally indulge in incredible fantasies. For example, what would you say about a diamond-encrusted glove? There is, and it was designed by Jacob & co. Or you might like some pink earphones with Swarovski crystals. In this case, an Indian brand called iWave took care of it. Or, again, the thong sandals with crystal gem proposed a few years ago by Tamara Comolli.

Then there is the shoe chapter: stylists have indulged in creating shoes that look like jewels or jewels that look like shoes, you name it. An example: Casadei designer shoes, with Swarovski crystals. Or those by Ruthie Davis that were liked, they say, by Beyoncé, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, and Lady Gaga. Perhaps the most surprising jewel, however, is represented by the pair of diamond-studded handcuffs signed a few years ago by the Swiss jeweler de Grisogono, which however no longer exists.

If we exclude that they are used by policemen with a mania for luxury, the suspicion arises that they are intended for fans of 50 Shades of Grey. Less unusual as an object, but equally precious is the perfume spray adorned with a gecko composed of small Colombian emeralds, which climbs on branches designed with diamonds. Some, however, will raise an eyebrow at the choker, a leather and gold dog collar style, with a bone-shaped pendant: it is designed by Chopard and is intended for high-class pets.

A little out of the ordinary, it must be admitted, was also the Grace Kelly pen by Montblanc, studded with diamonds and pink sapphires: who knows what you can write with such an object. The skirt by Titan Industries seems more traditional, but it isn’t, with designs made of cubic zirconia and Swarovski crystals: be careful when sitting down, though. Technology couldn’t be missing: an iPad cover colored with crystals to feel in step with technology.

The art of fine jewelery by Chopard

The Cannes Film Festival closed, the jewels remain. In the case of Chopard it is the classic Red Carpet collection, which is presented every year on the occasion of the film competition. Chopard has been an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival since 1998 and is also the luxury brand in charge of creating the Palme d’Or award for the winners. Award that Chopard has renewed this year: the palm is placed on a rock crystal block in the shape of an emerald-cut diamond, each one is a unique piece. The high jewelery collection is one that is not easily forgotten. The common thread chosen by the creative director and co-president of the Maison, Caroline Scheufele, is that of art.

But it is not a specific art, but creativity applied to the various forms in which it is expressed, such as literature, music, painting, sculpture, architecture and, of course, cinema. In all 76 pieces which, like the creative arts evoked, are completely different from each other. A common aspect, however, is the ethical nature of the materials used, from Fairmined certified 18-carat gold, to titanium (a novelty), up to the gems that come from ethically reliable sources.

Among the most impressive pieces are a ring with a pear-cut yellow diamond surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds, a white gold bracelet-watch with diamonds and blue sapphires, a titanium ring with a paraiba tourmaline and emeralds, chandelier earrings with diamonds, at whimsical necklaces and tailored rings, each piece in the collection makes a unique statement, a necklace in colored titanium and tanzanites, the largest of which is pear-shaped and weighs more than 32 carats.

Precious jewels in aluminum?

Aluminum has been rediscovered for quality jewelry. Here’s how to clean and store aluminum jewelery ♦ ︎

Cans for drinks, dishes, components for airplanes: aluminum is used for many things. And it seems that the jewelry is also rediscovering this light and resistant metal. It is not, in fact, a novelty: aluminum was shown for the first time at the Paris Expo in 1855. But, at that time, it was a rare material: for this reason it was used to create jewels. From that period, when aluminum was considered as precious as gold, there are still very few pieces. It was very expensive and much appreciated: those who could, they put on display an aluminum brooch. Blackened aluminum jewels were claimed at the court of Queen Victoria after the death of her beloved Albert and became popular throughout the British Empire.

The metal. Aluminum is the most common metal on Earth and one of the most common chemical elements. Until about a century ago, however, was not known the process to exctract it industrially from the minerals in which is found. It is a very light and resistant metal. It is not particularly toxic and does not cause allergies (except in rare cases). A curiosity: the aluminum oxide, also called corundum, in the form of transparent crystals is more known as sapphire and ruby. It is also the hardest natural substance after the diamond, with relative hardness 9 in the Mohs scale (which reaches 10).

Jewelry. When aluminum started to be produced in large quantities, its use in jewelry was practically ceased, apart from cheap jewelry. But recently, this material has been rediscovered creatively by some Maison who value its qualities, often with refined workmanship. Aluminum was used, for example, by Hemmerle, Vhernier, Chopard, Suzanne Syz or the young designer Emmanuel Tarpin. Among the advantages of aluminum there is undoubtedly the lightness, which allows you to make jewelry with a minimum weight. Furthermore, it is a very ductile and easy to work metal.

Aluminum care. Aluminum can oxidize. Aluminum jewels can get damaged when in contact with creams, soaps and acidic substances. Furthermore, care must be taken not to deform the metal if you are practicing a sport or doing housework. For cleaning, if the jewel has no other elements such as pearls or enamels, just immerse the jewel in warm water in which two drops of liquid soap have been dissolved. Rinse well and dry with a cotton cloth. Since the metal is resistant but can be damaged, it is better to store the jewels in aluminum separately, in containers where they are not in contact with other objects.

Butterflies by Chopard for Mariah Carey

In 1997 Mariah Carey made her debut with the album entitled Butterfly. A quarter of a century later, in 2022, the butterfly turned into a Chopard jewel. The Maison presented two lines: Happy Butterfly of high jewelery and the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Collection, designed with the accompaniment of the American singer. Obviously the jewels have the silhouette of the butterfly. Winged moths, in fact, are one of the topos of jewelry. But they don’t go out of fashion for this: a jewel in the shape of a butterfly always offers an image of lightness and joy.

The collection is also due to the relationship between Mariah Carey and Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard: the singer performed for the Swiss Maison at the Cannes 2019 Festival, when traditionally the brand presents the Red Carpet Collection of high jewelry. The Happy Butterfly collection includes three pieces of high jewelery with pavé diamonds: a pair of earrings, a necklace and a ring, all set in ethical and Fairmined certified 18K white gold, in addition to the Happy Butterfly x Mariah Carey Line, which is a line of fine jewelry in 18-karat gold, diamonds and carnelian.

Titanium jewelry: should you buy them?

Titanium jewelry: they are the last frontier of jewelry. Beautiful, but also difficult to make. Should you buy them? ♦

Long live titanium, which has become synonymous with creative audacity and high technology in jewelry from a key element in the aerospace industry. To what does it owe its success? To lightness, first of all: with a weight less than a fifth compared to gold, it allows large volumes and the same comfort in wearing, especially for earrings and bracelets. Not only that: those who associate titanium only with its sad gray color of origin are wrong: this metal can be dyed in bright and full shades, from lawn green to lacquer red, to intense purple, to electric blue. Furthermore, whatever the color obtained through an oxidation process, unlike what is done with the galvanic process on silver or other metals, it is much more resistant: it does not fade with time and does not risk detachment. But this is not the only technical advantage: its extreme resistance allows you to use less metal than gold and platinum for the frames and to create very thick pavé.

Masterpiece 2019: due spille con diamanti e zaffiri blu su titanio
Cindy Chao, Masterpiece 2019: due spille con diamanti e zaffiri blu su titanio

How to use it. Titanium is often used for thin and light metal architectures that serve as gem racks. It is no coincidence that most titanium jewels are literally covered with stones. One of the first to experiment with this material in jewelry was Jar (Joseph Arthur Rosenthal) in the late 1980s, and on the occasion of his retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, he created a collection of titanium and aluminum jewelery for sale inside the museum at affordable prices, from 2 to 5 thousand dollars. The fact that it is less expensive than gold must not be misleading, its processing requires great skill and technical knowledge, so it may happen that some jewels are even more expensive than their cousins made with more noble metals.

The admirers. Titanium jewels, therefore, are usually embellished with super precious stones, such as those of Wallace Chan, the jeweler from Hong Kong, or the Swiss Suzanne Syz, who made titanium his signature. And yet the sinuous tracery of Pomellato, which chose it to renew the Arabesque collection, or the delicate leaves of the Chopard bracelet with blue sapphires, the magnetic colors of the flower-shaped brooch by Giovanni Ferraris or the slight setting of the brooch by Michelle Ong, one of the few people who can boast a friendship with Jar. But there are also those who focus everything on design rather than precious stones, such as the Italian Maison Vhernier.

Orecchini in titanio verde e diamanti di Jacob & Co

Is it worth buying titanium jewelry? Titanium, like metal, costs less than gold, but is more difficult to use in jewelry. That said, the value of a titanium jewel is not determined by the cost of the raw material. If the gold of a jewel can be melted and resold, the same cannot be proposed for titanium. Therefore, when you buy a titanium jewel, you choose the design, the signature of the Maison, the gems that make up the piece. It is not said that a titanium jewel is more advantageous than a gold or platinum jewel: it depends on the stones that compose it.

Giovanni Ferraris, anello farfalla della collezione Titanium

How do you clean titanium? In addition to being light, titanium is very resistant: no problem for cleaning that can be performed with the usual mix of warm water, two drops of liquid soap and a toothbrush with soft bristles. If anything, the problem may be the structure of the jewel. Titanium, as we have explained, is often used to make jewels with a particularly imaginative shape, often together with many precious stones. You must be very careful, therefore, not to ruin the structure of the jewel with an excessively energetic cleaning. Monica Battistoni

Moi & Toi, story of a mythic ring

/

Moi et Toi, a shape of ring that is timeless. Like love. Here are some of the most fascinating rings Moi et Toi ♦

Two diamonds are better than one, especially in a ring. Who could argue otherwise? And not to copy a famous advertisement for De Beers, but because the ring style Toi et Moi, which has existed for centuries, with two stones on the ends that touch, exactly opposite, is the symbol of the union. Napoleon had engraved in 1796 on the shank of the engagement ring for his future wife Josephine, “You and me (toi et moi in French) , forever.” Hence the name, and the growing popularity of this type of setting, which reached its peak between the 19th and the 20th century.

Perhaps because it traced the romantic fashion of courting chair or sofa tete-a-tete with two seats positioned in S, so as to be able to speak, looking at each other in front. In reality, it has never gone out of fashion: John Kennedy gave a crossover Van Cleef & Arpels engagement ring to Jacqueline, with an emerald and a colorless diamond princess cut. Even the Queen of Denmark Margret had received one with two colorless diamonds six carat square cut, also made by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1967.

The jewelery brand continues to offer this style in the collection Snowflake flower shaped. And it is this detail that distinguishes the contemporary pieces: there is limited to offering stones proportions similar perhaps with contrasting colors, but they are decorative elements confront one another. Of course, when it comes to exceptional stones symmetry is fundamental to enhance their beauty. For example, in some specimens of Bulgari, that sometimes you can find in the jewelry auctions or those sold by Graff, Harry Winston, Alexander Reza, Messika or Picchiotti. Here a selection of the most beautiful and precious you can in the rooms for important customers of jewelers.

Films, plots, interpretations. But also many jewels: as always, the Cannes Film Festival reserves a spectacle in the show, that of dresses combined with necklaces, earrings and rings of high jewelery. On these occasions there are Maison more active than others, such as the Parisian Messika. With the jewels designed by Valérie Messika, the model Lori Harvey was on the show, wearing the High Jewelry Shards Of Mirror necklace combined with the Illusionistes diamond clips. And on her hands the two-fingered Danseurs Aériens ring and an iconic Toi & Moi ring. Messika should be mentioned first because it is the Maison most massively present at the Festival. Suffice it to say that a small army of celebrities showed up under the French brand’s banner in Cannes. Like the German model Toni Garrn, with her husband Alex Pettyfer, with earrings and ring by Twisted Wave, Rockefeller Double ring mixed with the famous Toi & Moi High Jewelry ring. Another model, Josephine Skriver, chose the brand’s iconic Zelda choker, combined with the Illusionistes asymmetrical earrings and the Concorde ring and the Twin Souls double ring. The supermodel Jasmine Tookes walked the runway with the Messika High Jewelry Magnetic Love single earring on one side and the Equilibristes earring on the other, paired with the Equilibristes ring and the Danseurs Aériens rings for her red carpet moment. Again: also from Messika the French TV and radio host Laurie Cholewa with My Twin Spiral. And Eva Longoria showed up with several Messika rings: Released Sun, the Independant Icon ring, the My Twin ring and the iconic Glam’Azone double ring for the Global Gift Gala.

Another Maison present in Cannes is Piaget. Katherine Langfrod and Forest Whitaker presented themselves with the creations of the Swiss Maison. The actress chose a high jewelery necklace from the Limelight Sunny Side collection in white gold, a large cushion-cut emerald of 12.20 carats and diamonds. In addition, she chose ring and earrings in white gold and diamonds. Forest Whitaker, actor and producer, opted for a refined Piaget Polo Emperador Tourbillon Watch.

Chopard high jewelery for the Cannes Film Festival

///

At the Cannes Film Festival, not only films are in competition, but also jewels. There is, however, a Maison that wins every year: it is Chopard, which has been a partner of the Festival for a quarter of a century and has created the Palme d’Or that rewards the winners. And, in addition, it presents its high jewelery collections. This year is also special because the Maison led by co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele celebrates 25 years of collaboration.

Collana di diamanti per 1369 carati ispirata al film di Alfred Hitchcock, Caccia al ladro (To Catch a Thief)

The combination is therefore celebrated in the best possible way: 75 pieces of fine jewelry inspired by the world of cinema. Plus a multicolored pendant that reproduces the sign of peace: a perfect idea for the tragic geopolitical moment that is sweeping the world. The jewels in the collection trace the entire history of cinema, from the first black and white films such as City Lights by Charlie Chaplin, with jewels made with white and black diamonds, to classic titles, such as the D-color diamond necklace, internally flawless, 13.69 carat, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film, To Catch a Thief, set right on the French Riviera.
Bracciale con diamanti bianchi e neri ispirato al film La carica dei 101 (101 Dalmatians)
Bracciale con diamanti bianchi e neri ispirato al film La carica dei 101 di Disney (101 Dalmatians)

There are also animated films, such as Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, which becomes a bracelet with dog figures made of black and white diamonds, which took more than 470 hours to work. The collection also features the theme of roses, such as the ring studded with pink sapphires that encloses a 2-carat diamond, or a choker with pink sapphire pearls and diamonds, or the brooch with petals covered with white diamonds.

The jewelers that close in Russia

The real drama is that of human lives lost in vain, of overwhelmed lives, of lives that will never be the same. But the war in Ukraine also causes a smaller, much smaller, but not irrelevant, drama related to jobs, in the West and in Russia, which will be lost to a stupid aggression. Both Russians and Westerners are dealing with the inevitable sanctions announced in time, before the invasion, which will have an impact on the accounts of companies, for example those of jewelry, as well as on the people who work there. The collapse of the ruble and the blocking of the credit card service, in fact, led many jewelry companies to suspend their business. Maybe they will close completely or reopen, if it all ends, but who knows when.

At the time of writing this short article, the last Western brand to close the boutique in Moscow was Swarovski, while Tiffany was among the first to lower the shutter, along with Vuitton. Others have already done so, others will follow. The list of Western Maisons that have opened a boutique in Moscow, St. Petersburg or other Russian cities is long. In Moscow, for example, they have a boutique Chopard, Van Cleef & Arpels, Akillis, Piaget, De Beers, H. Stern, Stephen Webster, Carrera y Carrera, Mauboussin, Mont-Blanc, Dior, Chaumet, Pandora, Frey Wille, Cartier , Trollbeads, Vuitton, Thomas Sabo, Bulgari, Pomellato, Adamas, Damiani, Buccellati. Other brands, such as Pasquale Bruni or Alcozer, are distributed in non-owned jewelers, or in airport duty free shops.
Boutique Damiani a Mosca

According to an analysis concerning Italian jewelery conducted by ICE (the state body for exports) in general, the Russian buyer is oriented towards medium or medium-high level jewelery. Also according to the analysis, the daily use of rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, especially in the capital and large cities, is now seen as a form of accessory to one’s image, not necessarily combined with luxury clothing or for events special. The favorite items of Russian women are rings, chains and earrings; men prefer chains and bracelets, while brooches and necklaces are bought by a minority of the female population, while typically male jewelry such as cufflinks and tie pins are in low demand. In recent years, however, silver jewelery has been more successful than gold, due to the unfavorable ruble-euro exchange rate. Italy (2019 data) exports about 77 million jewels to Russia, about 22 million France, the United States 21 million and the United Kingdom 23 million. However, the one who exports the most to Russia is China with over 88 million.

Chopard even greener with a maxi emerald

It is quite rare for a jewelry house to present something that is not a jewel. The only exceptions envisaged concern precious stones but, they are in exceptional cases, such as the one concerning Chopard. One of these concerns a large emerald weighing 6,225 carats which equates to over 1.2 kilograms. Certainly you don’t see many emeralds that big, but also of such high quality. The emerald also has a name: Chopard Insofu Emerald. The word insofu means elephant in Bemba, the language of the people living in the region of origin of the stone, in Zambia, Africa. The stone was extracted, in fact, in the Kagem mine and was chosen directly by the co-president and artistic director of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele.

The fully traceable stone will be cut into different pieces for use in future Chopard collections. The Maison, which for some time has chosen to use only fairmined gold, during the week of couture in Paris also presented other pieces of high jewelery, such as a ring with a 10.88 carat radiant cut fancy intense pink diamond and a Toi ring. & Moi with a 4.10 carat deep blue fancy diamond and a white diamond.

Chopard in paradise with the Red Carpet 2021

There is a star who has won all the Cannes Film Festivals from 1998 to today. But she is neither an actress nor a director, although in some way Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard, directs the Swiss Maison. Chopard, in fact, has been a partner of the festival for 23 years and, punctually, on the occasion of the event presents a collection of high jewelery, as well as designing and producing the famous Palme d’Or awarded to those who receive the jury’s prize. This year the jewels that make up the collection, inspired by paradise, are 74, like the editions of the Festival.

Chopard high jewelery, it should be remembered, is also at the forefront of sustainability and fairtrade policies for gold and gems. This does not mean that the jewels are dazzling enough to shine on the red carpets and, subsequently, around the neck of some lucky ones who can buy or receive extraordinary pieces as a gift, such as the necklace with a vivid yellow fantasy diamond of 23.26 carats. In short, the Red Carpet 2021 collection is a paradise for those who love large, multifaceted, brilliant precious stones. But also the bracelet marked, precisely, as the colors of paradise, with a strong central graphic motif composed of assorted garnets, tsavorites, lazulites and assorted tourmalines, crowned by a 24-carat cabochon-cut spessartite garnet.

High jewelery with lace for Chopard

//

A new collection, once again in the sign of fair trade diamonds: Chopard was one of the first Maison to embrace, for its jewels, the idea of materials without original sin behind it. The novelty is called Precious Lace Collection and is inspired by the favorite fabric of grandmothers, lace. Or perhaps, given the times, to great-grandmothers. The shape of the jewels, in fact, is quite elaborate, with soft lines, curves and, above all, scalloped edges that recall ancient lace. Obviously gold and diamonds, especially pear cut, are the preferred materials for the collection.

The collection was designed by Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president and artistic director. The idea is to offer high jewelry that can be worn (almost) every day, at least even on normal social occasions. A not secondary aspect concerns the processing of jewelry, which is not simple: reproducing a lace effect with metal and diamonds was not easy but, on the other hand, Chopard boasts a process of making top quality jewelry. Another aspect to reiterate: the gold and the diamonds used were purchased from companies certified by the Responsible Jewelery Council.

Nature according to Chopard

Chopard and the Cannes Film Festival have been officially engaged since 1998: not only is the Swiss Maison a sponsor of the event that takes place in May, but also realizes the award given to the winners, which has the shape of a palm tree in gold (ethical ), but Cannes is also associated with a high jewelery collection every year. After the preview and presentation that took place in conjunction with the festival, in May, the complete collection arrived with close-up images of the jewels.

2020 is the fourteenth Cannes-related Red Carpet Collection presented by Chopard’s co-president and artistic director, Caroline Scheufele. The collection is quite large: 73 pieces. The theme is a classic of jewelry, perhaps the one that accompanies most bracelets, necklaces and rings since women started wearing them: nature. Obviously there is the imagination of the designers to make a collection original: in the Chopard jewelry series, clovers and polar bears, orchids and pandas, owls and eagles, killer whales and seals are represented, as well as flowers with a name that is not immediately identifiable. Precious stones in the most surprising combinations, gold, but also titanium, combined with excellent craftsmanship are the ingredients of the collection.

Goodbye Baselworld, Hour Universe arrives

Hour Universe. The after Baselworld is (also) a play on words. Hour, an English word that indicates the time span of 60 minutes, also resembles to ours. In short, a universe that alludes to the concept of time, that measured by watches. After the sensational suicide of Baselworld, the most famous fair dedicated to jewelery and watches, the organizing company Mch has changed everything.

Rendering di Hour Universe
Rendering di Hour Universe

Hour Universe will take place in Basel from 8 to 12 April 2021, covid permitting. The new initiative is described as a hybrid platform for the watch, jewelry and gemstone community with a modern digital offering throughout the year, combined with physical meetings at the show. The planned and inclusive live event aims to facilitate networking and provide an experience based on the needs of exhibitors and visitors.
Mch also promises a new hospitality concept based on fair prices and supported by the local hotel industry. The exorbitant costs for participating in Baselworld were the deterrent that put the fair in crisis.

Will Hour Universe be able to convince the big groups that have left Baselworld? It will not be easy. The big names in the luxury sector not only said goodbye, but also organized other events. Companies such as the LVMH Group greeted Baselworld, with brands that include Tag Heuer, Hublot and Zenith and the Maison Bvlgari, as well as Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, Chanel and Chopard, Swatch and many others, including major jewelry brands. Many will participate in Watches & Wonders Geneva, an event that also brought the format to China. Other brands will organize events on their own. In short, the road to Hour Universe seems to be uphill.

Farewell Baselworld also for Rolex, Chopard and …

It is the end of an era, that of Baselworld. What happened now, until three or four years ago seemed unthinkable. Perhaps the fair will attempt a relaunch, no one knows: but the great event dedicated to watches and jewels will certainly not be the same if it ever lives on.

The largest companies, capable of attracting visitors and buyers from all over the world, namely Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard and Tudor, have announced their farewell to Baselworld. Alternatively, companies will offer a new watch trade show, but at the Palaexpo in Geneva. It will be held from April 2021, together with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, which organizes the Watches & Wonders (ex Sihh) salon. This year the two events, Baselworld and Watches & Wonders, have been suspended due to the coronavirus.

We have been present at Baselworld since 1939. However, despite our great attachment to this event, given its evolution and the recent decisions made by the Mch group we decided to withdraw and, following the discussions started by Rolex, it seemed natural to us to create a new event with partners who shared our vision and our continuous and unshakable support for Swiss watchmaking.
Jean-Frédéric Dufour, CEO of Rolex and board member of Tudor

Days ago, was born a dispute arose about the costs incurred from the companies: Baselworld, in fact, proposed to use 85% of the advance payment by exhibitors for the subsequent fair, set at the end of January 2021, while 15% was calulated to cover the costs incurred by Mch, the company that manages the Basel fair. A proposal that raised companies and led to the strong decision to abandon Baselworld to their fate.

“The goal is to offer partner brands the best possible professional platform, with a shared vision that allows them to face future challenges in the watchmaking world. The event will also give crucial importance to the sector’s expertise and innovations, both in Switzerland and internationally “, is written in the press release of the transfugee companies.

Today Patek Philippe is no longer in line with Baselworld’s vision: there have been too many discussions and unresolved problems that have undermined our trust. We must meet the legitimate needs of our dealers, customers and the press around the world. These must be able to discover new models from Swiss watchmakers every year, at once, in one place and in the most professional way possible. This is why, following an in-depth comparison with Rolex and in agreement with other participating brands, we decided to create, all together, a unique event in Geneva, representative of our know-how.
Thierry Stern, president of Patek Philippe

Mch Group, for its part, expressed “great surprise and deep regret”. But the damage is been done.

High jewelry with Love from Chopard

///

The Chopard Red Carpet Love high jewelry collection created by Caroline Scheufele ♦ ︎

The destiny of Chopard and the red carpet, in particular that of the Cannes Film Festival, are intertwined: the jewelery brand has been the official partner of the event since 1998. That’s why the 2019 of the Swiss Maison’s high jewelry is called Red Carpet Collection, but with the addition of the word Love, which for the co-president and artistic director of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele, was the inspirational theme. But beware, the Red Carpet Collection not only celebrates the Cannes International Film Festival, but in general the theme of emotions aroused by love.

A vast theme, as one can easily guess, which then turns into different jewels, just as every love is different from the others. Precious and colored stones are used in all shades, and this also recalls the Love theme. The collection also includes some ring suites, earrings and necklace, but more in general they are unique pieces, those that become objects that symbolize a Maison, thanks to the care and elaborate design that distinguishes them. Diamonds, of course, also in Paraiba tourmalines, opals, tanzanites and amethysts are the real protagonists of the collection. How not to feel a little love for them too?
